I may be wrong but I feel 9/10ths of songwriting is effective editing. And my hope is that the ability to edit improves with practice, so 50/90 sounds like a good exercise. I have no idea whether I'm going to get to 25, let alone 50. But it might be quite interesting to discover.

From what people say, or don't say, I get the feeling I stray in to "quirkiness" more than is desirable, but I don't notice when I'm doing it, so that can't be helped. I'm constrained by the fact that I'm not a musician, but constraints aren't necessarily a handicap. Words are the hardest part for me because I'm very self-conscious, and end up second and third guessing myself (i.e. effective editing of words is very challenging).

Melody crafting is the best bit - I approach it increasingly like I would a puzzle, though whether that's improving them or not I don't know. The bit that intrigues me the most is structuring. It feels like the bit I have explored the least, but probably could yield dividends. So I'm going to try to keep things limber, and stray from the more familiar pastures to something a bit alien, but I won't be doing it just for the sake of it.
