Liner Notes:

owl: @see-man-ski and I signed up to be in a Songfight Instaband (a bunch of people put their names down and they randomly draw names and assemble bands to record a song to an assigned title) and ended up in the same band along with a couple of other non-50/90 folks:

seemanski: lyrics, vocals, melody
fluffy: drums, music, horns
mo: guitar, music, keys, mixing and mastering
owl: bass, backing vocals, guiro, tambourine, keys, horns

This was a fun collaboration, and outside my usual comfort zone as far as genres go! I asked Mo how he'd tag it and he said "Marvin Gaye mixed with Steely Dan" so I've put that in the tags even though I kind of despise Steely Dan but I don't despise this track.

We are known as Colicky Zebras.

Lyrics:

I put you down as a maybe
a guest of honour that will betray me
I put a question mark beside your name
and with every answer I get
it always sounds the same

I only imagined It
but it felt like a real ending
I only imagine that
our paths went spiralling
I only imagined It
but it felt like a real ending
to me

darling I just think that you are paranoid
always holding me at gunpoint
I have no reason to apologise
but honestly, if it gets through the day
you can fantasize

I only imagined It
but it felt like a real ending
I only imagine that
our lives went spiralling
I only imagined It
but it felt like a real ending
to me

just put yourself in my shoes
would you put up with you?

I put you out like a cheap suit
as you lack the luster in my passion fruit
I put full stop at the end of us
I have no room left to adjust

I only imagined It
but it felt like a real ending
I only imagine that
our paths went spiralling
I only imagined It
but it felt like a real ending
to me

I only imagined you
then imagined we were through

i despise steely dan as well and am happy not to hear their influence on this track, which i like. i love marvin gaye and wish there were more of him here beyond the title phrase

This is a great song. Kind of demented, but in a good way. Love the bandy feel, and the loose ending - room to breathe. Very enjoyable chorus, big, bold. Just a bunch of fun.

Those. Vocals. Your voices sound fantastic together! Cool 90's alt-rock sound, and I love the jazzy vibey bits. This is amazing. Good luck in the fight!

This has strong Beck vibes, can totally imagine it being on Midnite Vultures. It's an awful lot of fun. Great great vocal performance, can't really stress that enough. Those brass lines and the way they power the chorus (or what I'm assuming is the chorus!) are just funky as a funky thing. And yeah, the live band feel to it is amazing. Also, kudos on the band name. Well done to all involved Smile

So much to like here…Owl…come out into the daylight more often. You rule the night but there’s lots of kill’n it to be done during the day. Well done all collaborators, vocals, arrangement, production, instrumentation. For me it really kicks in 37 seconds in. That’s when I just said…Yeeeeesssssss….In a very chill way. That chorus is killer.

I'm loving that groove right out of the gate. (Those drums sound really great in my laptop speakers!) The first line drew me in and the next one had me totally hooked. The chorus is so sweet, and even better when you bring in the bvox. There's a lot to love here, not least of which is the kick ass lead vocal. It all works, even the sort of looseness in the performance. (Listen to Episode 3 of the 1619 Project podcast and you might gain a greater appreciation for yacht rock.)
