Colleen: So glad I discovered @greengrassgirl and her lyrics this 50/90. Patty is a fabulous lyricist…never felt a need to alter any words yet! I hope you enjoy this song on the heartache that can happen in a monogamous relationship when you feel an ache for another soul mate but know you need to keep the commitments you have made to another person.
Patty: Colleen's interpretation of these lyrics is powerful. She really captured the angst that I had in mind. I can hear the ache in her voice.
Lyrics:
V1
You burst in the door uninvited
To a life I’d carefully planned
I’d know what to do with these feelings
If not for this wedding band
V2
It’s not that I don’t still love her
I believe in for better or worse
We built a life and it’s working
But I wish I’d found you first
Chorus
If I had found you
If I’d found you first
I’m turned inside out by this twist of fate
Now that I’ve found you, is it too late?
I know the past can’t be reversed
But if I’d found you first…
V3
The way I feel when I’m with you
Has stirred up my own private war
Is happy enough, enough for me—
Should I risk it all for more?
Chorus
If I had found you
If I’d found you first
I’m turned inside out by this twist of fate
Now that I’ve found you, is it too late?
I know the past can’t be reversed
But if I’d found you first…
Bridge
Love is supposed to be joyous
But my choices are filled with pain
A lifetime of guilt if I leave her
Heartache if I remain
Chorus
If I had found you
If I’d found you first
I’m turned inside out by this twist of fate
Now that I’ve found you, is it too late?
I know the past can’t be reversed
But if I’d found you first…

This is really contemplative... I like it a lot. I remember when the lyrics were posted and the were poignant. While many might not admit it, I think a lot of folks will relate.
This is what makes songwriting so wonderful... I heard a different musical treatment, that I thought might work, and then hearing this thinking what a great take on the lyric!
Super Collab! Thanks for posting!!

The internal struggle if evident in the lyrics and performance. It is a heartbreaking subject that I am sure many can relate to. I love the emotion in your voice. This is a wonderful collaboration!
That chorus melody is an absolute winner! It's clear how much you've connected with the lyrics (which are fab!). Love the gentle fingerpicking and the emotion in the vocal. 'A lifetime of guilt if I leave her / Heartache if I remain' is a stunning couple of lines. Great collab guys!
Such a beautiful rendition of the situational moral dilemma many people find themselves in. A powerful lyric, a lovely melody. Well done, the both of you!
a sad conundrum that plagues most of us at one time or another.
