The Road Ahead

Demo:

Liner Notes:

I rarely sit down down, particularly musically, and try and copy a specific artist! But I am trying to do an album in that very generic gravely balladeer style often used by Cohen, Waits, Cave even down to Dr John and others. As i put my final touches to the demos its interesting to see the direction they have gone! I have certainly gone Cave way on one song, Cohen on a few (most of my likeness seen by others is to him) but this one to my ear listening back is more Waits! I don't just mean vocals i mean the whole flavour. Anyway this was done early my today and with some more production will make it to the Album i am pretty sure. I am still to post a few but i think I have my dozen for the Album.

Lyrics:

V1 Is it strewn with bodies
Or paved with piles of gold
Is it warm and inviting
Or tired and bleak and cold

V2 What does the future hold
Pain just like the past
Or perhaps a new world
With happiness that will last

C The road ahead, oh the road ahead
Its secrets too impart
Will it give me my greatest love
Or will it break my heart

V3 Its a conundrum to most of us
Do we really want to know
If its not what we want
Would we change to make it so!

V4 Would we go with our fate
Act with despondency
And allow it to become
A self fulfilling prophecy

C The road ahead, oh the road ahead
Its secrets too impart
Will it give me my greatest love
Or will it break my heart

B Me I don't want to know
I think its better that way
Just live it the best you can
Enjoy each and every day

C The road ahead, oh the road ahead
Its secrets too impart
Will it give me my greatest love
Or will it break my heart

Outro Will it give me my greatest love
Or will it break my heart

Good message. I'm sure I would have been overwhelmed if I woulda, coulda, shoulda known. Like the slow, hesitancy in the music, matches the lyrics nicely. Good melody.

the lyrics of the chorus and one chord change at the beginning are certainly in the waits style. bur overall i would equate it closer to the cohen template/

Definitely getting the Cohen vibe. I think it really fits the lyrics. I love the line "If it's not what we want; Would we change to make it so!" Production is strong as always!

I think your bridge has the best life advice anyone can give. That's pretty much all you can do. Do your best and enjoy what you got. Excellent. Waits, Cohen, I don't know their music much, but this is a cool sounding track. It's a got nice, slow make you wait for it type of vibe.

This music is mighty agreeable to me. Right from the start I knew I was going to like this song…The lyrics are wonderful too, icing on the cake. Very tastefully done.

This is really wonderful. I don’t think of it so much as a “copy“ of either Tom waits or Leonard Cohen or any of the others but just a wonderfully passionate and engaging piece of existential angst. I love that wonderfully Reverb’d guitar line. You might want to add some lead instrument for a few of the more instrumental bits but I wouldn’t add too much this I love the sparseness of it. Great vocal.

Love the nice simple tremeloed arrangement--and a very nice vocal treatment, John. Really very, very good.

But I resent your showing off that you can get past 100 songs! Wink

(I won't even get to 50 this year...)
