Liner Notes:

Been too busy to work on music lately, luckily I did most of this over a month ago and have just been putting off getting it uploaded.

This is my contribution to the "Game Night" challenge. The game cue was "The Crew" which is about a mission to discover Planet Nine. The narrative of the game is rather straight forward with the game play coming from dealing with the various situations that go wrong on the way. No aliens, just good old fashion Moore's law.

Because of that I decided to write an instrumental piece that evoked the feeling of the journey, lift-off to the return home. Musically I like what I came up with, but the whole thing had a certain seriousness that didn't speak to the game element... they are suppose to be fun after all.

I asked @Nahlej381 if he could lay down some verse for the middle part of the song and he agreed, with outstanding results.

The lyrics he had really gave the whole thing that extra spark it needed and he perfectly captured the "working man in space" vibe the game suggests.

I feel in love with a couple of the line though and wanted them to line up with some musical cues, so I hacked away at his performance (with his consent) and moved things around a bit. Hopefully the edits work the way I think they do.

Below I've put the lyrics as they appear in the song, followed by how they were in the original recording.

It's worth noting that at a little over 14 minutes, this song can almost serve as a soundtrack to the actual game. Wink

Lyrics:

[INTRO]
Organize plan repair that’s the mantra chaos theorist I shoulda brought more ganja oh my god I’m so exhausted we all are fixin up this bucket of bolts like a pit crew in nascar balls to the wall from the start pounding in my chest like there’s music in my heart we crewed up environmental suits up blasting off giant step for man pick your shoes up no hostile ETs to shoot up engine gunked up with some moon dust grab my gear and clean her up

engine gunked up with some moon dust grab my gear and clean her up

[VERSE]
this my last mission and it feels like a false start I don’t think the maintenance crew even checked this ship gotta make that money so they just rubber stamped it when I get back I’ll file grievances with corporate sending us out on some bullshit code red alarms blast the temps are dropping and the lights are out lucky I keep my tools on hand a fool and his tools are quickly separated good thing this ain’t my first rodeo the crew is tight but they barely know me though get the lights back on all the bleeps and bloops looking nerdy yo I’m clean cut but I’m riding dirty though

[VERSE]
Now what? Coffee break I just smoked my lunch can’t say for sure but I got a hunch my work is never done love to stay and chat but I gotta run or were dead in the water so to speak space debris collides we got a hull breach radios still down so we’re a team with no speech the training kicks in we fix it with ease no sense in whining without cheese run diagnostics some wires getting crossed I think batten down the hatches space travel is playing with matches one wrong move it’s ashes to ashes adjust the compression fittings on flux capacitors this missions like a headphone mix without a master I just wanted to go faster farther and take my medicine: laughter but this feels like a disaster

engine gunked up with some moon dust grab my gear and clean her up
engine gunked up with some moon dust grab my gear and clean her up
engine gunked up with some moon dust grab my gear and clean her up

[VERSE]
The rest of the crew be a buncha rookies space age groupies postponing repairs cuz they’re are views to see but to me that’s just a distraction turn off the view screen interstellar grease monkey mechanical junkie if this barge is gonna get me home I gotta keep her runnin peak the commander is sneaking 40 winks shit for brains all he does is stink what a shocker two in the pink he threw up in the sink get your act together or we’ll be gone in a blink no comms it’s in the cards and the rocket trumps anti gravity the bass still thumps last mission I retire at the end of the month pushing through the dark to earn a buck

engine gunked up with some moon dust grab my gear and clean her up
engine gunked up with some moon dust grab my gear and clean her up
engine gunked up with some moon dust grab my gear and clean her up

This is very cool. I love the otherworldly quality the music with the percussive beat and the layering of different choral and instrumental sounds to serve as a perfect stage for the various spoken vocals and effects. The words are really engaging and draw me deeply in to the stories and the personal insights and narrative. Really awesome!
