@Hypnotist and I decided to a lyrics swap. He posted his song within 24 hours because he's efficient like that (http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/song/51423). Here's my take on his lyrics. I love how the thrust of the argument keeps shifting from verse to verse, the narrator seems to be constantly second guessing and reassessing things. When Hypnotist sent them over, he said the idea was to do a bit of a 'Randy Newman turnaround'... and so I've attempted to smuggle a bit of Randy into the music too. I'm not sure how successfully.

Lyrics:

Lyrics: [@Hypnotist]

Like party balloons, bobbing along on a short length of cord
Some people seem to float through life like it ain't no wreath of thorns
I try to make plain the trouble they're in but what do they care?
Some people are just the thinnest of skins, some string and some air

It's wrong to suggest these people just ain't the sharpest of tools
The trick that they do - and I've tried it too - ain't easy for fools
But how can you trust a person who says that hope isn't dead?
All optimists must be cooking the books and drowning in red

I guess what you're thinking and maybe its this:
"Don’t the optimists help in some way?!"
and maybe they do, I really can't say,
but how can they act like they do EVERY DAY?

And what do I know? It may be that they believe every part
That saddens me more than if it was some dumb performance art
If things will be fine, there's zip on the line, there's nothing at stake
What's for dessert if all that you eat is chocolate cake?

I try to explain the trouble they're in but what do they care?
Some people are just the thinnest of skins, some string and some air
Some string and some air, some string and some air

Please keep your comments respectful, honest, and constructive. Please focus on the song and not the demo.

Oh dear, I think @Hypnotist just wrote about me - lol! Beautiful piano and vocals, of course.

Yes, really getting the Randy Newman vibe with this one. Superb vocal delivery and a melody that sets the excellent lyrics perfectly. Well done.

forget about randy 'whatsisname' newman. this song owes nothing to nobody.. beautifully written and sung, it speaks of pessimism but has none of the cynical nastiness of the professional pessimist. it is a lovely waltz into nothingness through the gardens of eloi.

and

Fine, fine writing! And the music is just perfect, as are the vocals.

A great collab!

I mostly like the picture of the dog. That dog is definitely a pessimist. You two amaze me. What more can I say. Love the lyrics. Randy Newman vibe in full force. Great production....And how about that dog...

very fine lyric and a class performance! oh and a fine dog Smile What's for dessert if all that you eat is chocolate cake? is enough of a message for a whole song! maybe a whole conference. it actually remind me of ballady stuff by Ocean Colour Scene (who i love).

That's a really great lyric, melancholic and maudlin, and that fairground carousel melody and hurdy gurdy style accompaniment and lilting vibrato vocal works perfectly. Great idea for an intra collab challenge . well done.

Yes, Randy Newman is here in spirit. The piano and strings are also Newmanesque. Very wise and moving lyrics. A very fine collaboration.
