Sweeter For The Blame
Post date:

Liner Notes:
Another feel good hit for 50/90! I'm not naming names, but it might be easy enough to figure out who inspired these verses. However, they're really just representative of the many others just like them, from street creepers to grabby managers, from lecherous professors to anyone who uses their position of power to abuse others then shift the blame to the abused party. They're everywhere from the front pages of the newspaper to your all-American small town.
NOTE: AS BEFORE, this is not the place to discuss politics or even the parties alluded to here. Keep comments to song construction. Can't do that? There are 3,800+ other songs to visit instead of mine.
Lyrics:
VERSE 1
Praise the Lord on Sunday
From your pulpit up on high
Pass around the plate
So your flock can pay their tithe
But Monday finds you in
Another pay-to-play
The Almighty Dollar is
The god to which you pray
Women, drugs, and booze
Debauchery behind closed doors
You're the one who sold your soul
Yet you dare to call them whores
And when the story leaks
Go whip up a media storm
You can't be held responsible
The Devil corrupts through women's form
CHORUS
I guess that makes me
Sweeter for the blame
Like my ancestors before me
Our feet held to the flame
Tie us to a stake
To save our soul in the Lord's name
You're the one who bears the shame
But we're sweeter for the blame
VERSE 2
Silver spoon Bethesda babe
Privileged before your first step
Learned the rules don't apply to you
In your days at Georgetown Prep
Ivy League entitlement
Knew just which strings to pull
Get a little quid pro quo
While you're pulling down the wool
And you learned how to dance
The Old Potomac Two-Step
Friends in high places unwove
That Judiciary web
Call her a liar
Cuz that beer made you forget
But I still want to know
Just who paid off all your debt
CHORUS
I guess that makes me
Sweeter for the blame
Like my ancestors before me
Our feet held to the flame
Tie us to a stake
To save our soul in the Lord's name
You're the one who bears the shame
But we're sweeter for the blame
BRIDGE
All the vipers in our midst
All the narratives they twist
It can never be their fault
Point to the ones in a ring of salt
That's how it's been for centuries
Generational fallacies
Will I and my sisters be the first
To break this patriarchal curse
From Lilith down to the Dark Ages
Anne Boleyn to Salem sages
It's always women who are outspoken
We're the ones who must be broken
CHORUS
I guess that makes me
Sweeter for the blame
Like my ancestors before me
Our feet held to the flame
Tie us to a stake
To save our soul in the Lord's name
You're the one who bears the shame
But we're sweeter for the blame
Until our power is reclaimed
We'll be sweeter for the blame
