EDIT: The UTAU version of this song is now uploaded here: http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/song/49778

I'll be celebrating the 9th anniversary of my UTAU character's release next month, so I wanted to write a song that I could have her sing to mark the occasion. (I feel the need to clarify that this demo doesn't use my UTAU's vocals, it uses mine, but I plan to make a second version later that uses her.) Orange is her signature color, which led me to thinking about the citrus fruit, and that became the seed of inspiration from which the rest grew. Now that the song itself is done, I'm hoping I'll be able to finish the synth-vocal version of the track + a simple video to put up on the day. Not sure yet whether I'll post that version here.

As for the song, this has got to be one of my favorite things I've ever made. I often have trouble getting a sound I like when it comes to pop/rock, but I feel that I learned a lot while making this, and it came out just like how it sounded in my head. Compared to most of what I've written, this is a lot closer to the kind of stuff that I listen to on a day-to-day basis, so I'm excited to have made some progress in that direction.

Audio-wise, a lot of the writing process for this was just throwing a bunch of instruments at the wall and seeing what stuck. Piano, guitar, drums, bass? Check. Glockenspiel? Sure, why not! Steel drum synth? Toss it on in there! Overall, I had a lot of fun.

Lyrics:

[Verse]
You breathe the fruity fragrance in
But still, you never eat a bite
Why did you seem so puzzled when
You said you weren’t satisfied?

Someday when this thing is done
You’ll get to all that you have planned
But “someday” never seems to come
And all the days turn out bland

[Prechorus]
If you say you want a taste

[Chorus]
Does it hit the spot?
Just one way to find out
It’ll spoil
If you stand and wait around

Peeling back the outer skin
There’s something tender that waits within
Is it sour?
Is it sweet like orange?

[Verse]
Now you try to catch yourself
When you start to say “It would be nice”
You’re learning how to help yourself
When you crave another slice

You won’t invent a new excuse
‘Cause you know you’re reaping what you’ve sown
Though man can’t live on orange juice
Having had it, you’ve already grown

[Prechorus]
Finally, you got a taste

[Chorus]
Does it hit the spot?
Just one way to find out
It’ll spoil
If you stand and wait around

Peeling back the outer skin
There’s something tender that waits within
Is it sour?
Is it sweet like orange?

[Chorus]
Does it hit the spot?
Just one way to find out
It’ll spoil
If you stand and wait around

Peeling back the outer skin
There’s something tender that waits within
Is it sour?
Is it sweet like orange?

Is it sour?
Is it sweet like orange?

I had to look up what UTAU is; very cool, and I need to check it out! But turning to the song, this has almost a 70s dance feel to it, which I really enjoy. It’s happy and upbeat and almost has a proto-disco piano dance number feel. Your (human) vocals are light and breezy and a joy to hear as well. Very smooth and polished, and a great number to dance away this Saturday night with a fruity drink in my hand!

This is great! The arrangement is awesome, the distorted guitar over the softer music, love it. Reminds me of "Sawakaze" from Kimi Ni Todoke. It just works really well. The composition is really nice, love the vocal effect in the pre-chorus and the little transition bit into the chorus. The lyrics are really interesting here also. I really enjoyed this tune, it has a lot of character and the instrumental is especially good.

best song ive heard about oranges. the piano part is super cute and the distortion guitar adds a roughly hewn texture. the melody is very catchy;,lyrics are excellent and i love your voice as is. glad to hear it before you put the UTAU on it.

I also had to look up UTAU and this music feels perfect! I love the upbeat pop rock feel with the great drums and keys and the fuzzy guitar/synth syncopation. Has a really good feel and the lyrics are great! As always your vocals are absolutely gorgeous but now I wonder about this other voice you mention.

Very solid bubbly cheerful pop song. I like that last bit in the chorus. I’ll be hearing that in my head for a while now.

I have no idea what UTAU is, but I am assuming a video game of some kind. Love the chorus, and the way it jumps out from the verse as well as the lyrics themselves.

This sounds very fun. The "something tender the waits within" draws to me. All the layers make the song very entertaining. Lovely vocal too!

This is very breezy and laid back, the guitar bit gives it just enough "bite" and not having it lose that really relaxed feel. Vocals do sound lovely, but do let me know when you add the others or re-do it, I think it'll be a perfect fit.

Delightful - all kinds of cool, well-played sounds! I absolutely love this, and even though it relates very specifically to your character, can be thoroughly enjoyed without the context. Great vocal!

Really catchy chorus, digging the way you sing "if you stand and wait around".
Verse vocal melody is cool, too.
I'm a sucker for songs that relate stuff to food, so I enjoy these lyrics.
Light and airy piano with a crunchy guitar go really nicely with your clear voice. Also the melodies you're playing on the piano/chimes are really nice in the ears.
Definitely catchy. Really enjoyed my listen,

Had to come and compare this to the 'finished' UTAU work and yeah, I think I slightly prefer this 'live' vocal version but I can really appreciate what you had to do in order to make the UTAU version work, and why it was important for you to do the newer version. Cheers!
