Liner Notes:

This is a 'skirmish' where you are given a title and have a certain amount of time (usually one hour) to write and record something using that title. I was busy during the day when the skirmish happened, and later saw the topic 'almost there'. I thought right away about how here in the US, in some places there has been just about herd immunity with about 70% or more vaccination rate, while in some other areas of the country, the rate is way way lower (in some counties its ten or fifteen percent!)

So this lyric kind of 'wrote itself' with that in mind. I should note that a song like this is not written in the belief it'll suddenly make half the country change its mind, but really only for my own social observation, and anyone who wants to listen. (So let's not get into 'the vaccine is good or bad or whatever' on this board) I probably spent about an hour and a half on the whole thing, just to be clear, but the writing took under an hour for sure.

Recorded using an old 12-string guitar, and my iPhone, using that music memos app to add drums, then added a vocal and did a little eq and such in audacity. If i had longer I might have written more verses, but I think it conveys the idea.. Smile enjoy!

And yes, if you compare the two maps, its pretty scary....(just fyi)

Lyrics:

Take two maps the first how people voted
The second the rate of vaccinations
Compare ‘em both and you see a pattern
Its true everywhere in this nation

The blue states have met the vaccinations goals
70% in the arms of young and old
While the red states have all missed that mark
Delta variant’s waiting like a hungry shark

Now some folks will say you’re just being divisive
but facts are facts the rest is spin
the closer to herd immunity we get
the sooner normal life can again begin

In Boston, in Frisco and in Manhattan
Vaccination rates have made that Covid death rate flatten
In the strongholds of the prior president
Vaccination rate’s like fifteen percent

Take two maps the first how people voted
The second the rate of vaccinations
Compare ‘em both and you see a pattern
Its true everywhere in this nation

The blue states have met the vaccinations goals
70% in the arms of young and old
While the red states have all missed that mark
Delta variant’s waiting like a hungry shark

I always learn so much from your songs, Mike. It's like an auditory infographic. Although this particular one doesn't surprise me terribly. Sigh.

The rhymes in V4 made me smile. I doubt you'll get a more apt occasion for the Manhattan/flatten rhyme, so well done for taking advantage of this.

I also liked the final refrain of the hungry shark. Nice to have a metaphor to linger on after all the content in the verses. Great work!

You are always spot on on an array of important topics and this is a fantastic one. I do not understand why they don't get it. Great and powerful song!

Yep, we are one crazy species. Nicely written sarcastic statement - and I love the irony of the upbeat folky arrangment & melody.

You certainly have a way with the words. The best line for me.............."Delta variant’s waiting like a hungry shark" . Brilliant!

Great take on the prompt. Enjoyed the happy melody mixed with the “not getting there” reality. Well written!

Killer guitar riff! Sounds awesome on the 12-string. Love the topical lyrics - you cover a lot of ground and in the framework of the rhyme scheme. You are carrying the bardic tradition! I learned a lot listening to your tune Smile

Very clever and catchy take on a sad-but-true phenomenon - your rhymes are irresistible, and the guitar is head-bopping fun. Glad to hear you end on an optimistic major chord - let’s keep our fingers crossed! Great skirmishinng!

This song works well in the same way a Phil Ochs song would work well. Despite Dylan saying he was "just" a journalist, he was a great songwriter who could write poetry when poetry was needed and facts when facts were needed...and you are carrying on that fine tradition.

I came to see what you meant by "my production is alot rougher then yours of course!". It's a lot easier to focus on the EQ and compressors when the computer is playing the piano for you. Wink I think this sounds great and your lyrics are loads better than what I cranked out.

Yes! Indeed, the map overlay is striking. Rural republican voters have the lowest vaccination rate of any demographic group. Love the guitar on this and the movement. The keen observation and pointed perspective is very well stated and delivered.

It definitely conveys the message, Mike! And the demo is up to your usual high standard. Impressive work. Smile

Very god writing, you have a skill for presenting difficult ideas in an accessible (and singable) way.

A catchy tune on an important topic. Love the guitar performance, and the "hungry shark" comparison is apt. Great skirmish!

I had a similar idea but didn't get far with it. Brilliant song, Mike. Very cool singing and playing.

This one hit close to home, living in a blue city in the middle of an otherwise red wasteland makes things difficult out here. I've also learned it's next to useless to explain to anyone why they should get their vaccine and chose just to stay away from them. Love the matter of fact way you deliver the lyrics, there's no debate. Very nice use of the prompt!

"Delta variants like sharks" and "facts are facts, the rest is spin" are two killer lines. Oops, did I say "killer"?
Music sounds great on this one, tone of everything is right on.
