When I resumed playing guitar and started songwriting I got very interested in 'songwriter's songwriters' and Nanci was certainly one of them to me, along with John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Lucinda Williams, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, etc.. At that point I think I had her MCA retrospective CD but had not given it a proper listen yet. I bought a compilation songbook called Folk Pop Rock. Thumbing through the songs and reading the lyrics I just had to learn Nanci's song 'It's A Hard Life Wherever You Go'. As I recall, that was one of the first cover songs that I memorized. It still hits me between the eyes.

I didn't know much about her until very late on when i heard Jimmy Webb rave about her so caught up and listened, she mixed it with all the best, a real talent in that classic singer songwriter style.

I didn't recognize her name immediately, but I know 'It's A Hard Life Wherever You Go' and a few of her other songs just from the top of my head. She was a really great writer and performer.

I’ve enjoyed her songs for a long time. Sad, I feel like she was probably a good person. Too young.
