Hello Phillip, I'm glad to see you here. I first started off writing poems many years ago then I eventually started writing lyrics. Somewhere along the line I picked up a guitar and now I mostly do complete songs (and collaborations, either music or lyrics). I mostly write country as that seems to be my natural guitar style :) I like all of your influences, for me, country is the easiest to write to.

For form, you'll find your own style once you start writing more. For me, my starting format for lyrics is 2 verses of 4 lines each, 1 chorus of 4 lines, and a 3rd verse of 4 lines (or repeat the first verse). I frequently abandon that if the song warrents, but it is an easy starting point. It almost sounds too easy huh? :) The key is to just write and you'll decide what works best for you.

There is an awesome free ebook that Tom Slatter put out that includes some great songwriters from around here and also a entry from me available here http://www.songwright.co.uk/2010/06/20/10-tips-for-songwriters-2/. Sometimes just seeing what other people think can be helpful.
