BIO:

I'm a performing singer-songwriter from Orkney, now based in Edinburgh. I've got a solo CD out, called Honesty And Thorns, please consider listening to it or buying it at www.calumcarlyle.co.uk or www.myspace.com/calumcarlyle

I'm forming a band to play my own music, and am also in another Edinburgh band, called Neoviolet. I also help to run Out Of The Bedroom, which is Edinburgh's longest running open mic night, and which is for original songwriters only.

I'm playing at Wickerman Festival this year, and going on a tour of Scotland in August, all of which i'm very much looking forward to.

PS - unless stated otherwise, i'm singing and playing everything on my demos.

PPS - Huge thanks to whoever donated to 5090 on my behalf, i was very impressed.

PPPS - looks like i'm going to be too busy to write or upload till at least 10 or 11 August, so that's my schedule out the window! :-)

I'm a performing singer-songwriter from Orkney, now based in Edinburgh. I've got a solo CD out, called Honesty And Thorns, please consider listening to it or buying it at www.calumcarlyle.co.uk or www.myspace.com/calumcarlyle

I've formed a band to play my own music, and am also in another Edinburgh band, called Neoviolet. I also help to run Out Of The Bedroom, which is Edinburgh's longest running open mic night, and which is for original songwriters only.

I played at Wickerman Festival this year (it was awesome), and i'm going on a tour of Scotland in August which i'm very much looking forward to.

Thanks for the link, Calum, I plan on using the 'sounds of silence" to chill out after a long today i know i'll be having...

Hi Calum, thanks for your comment :0) I haven't played any gigs for a couple of years now, unfortunately real life sideswept me for a while there, plus I'm about 4 members short of a good band! bit low on confidence but If I can pluck up enough dutch courage again, I'll let you know where I'm gigging. Really appreciate the comment, cheers :0)

Hi Calum, wanted to say thanks very much for commenting on my song "crackin". Really appreciated. I was reading your comments in the forum about pseudonym names so actually laughed when I saw your comment on "crackin" cause there was roddy commenting above you and agreeing with "callum's comments" - classic! Hope the tours goin well :0)

Thanks Calum for the comments. I love doing the ambient guitar stuff (Summer Storm) and I'm glad some people like it... the harmonizer vocal stuff (Company of Clones) was a lot of fun... the lyrics for that series were just improv... a play on the fact that the harmonizer "cloned" my voice into multiple harmonies... I used it in a real song called "sing it forever" and yes... I am glad that I decided to get the banjo out and rework the song into a banjo tune. :)

Hi Calum, thanks for the good comments. You can now click directly on the songs I just posted using the address under the demo tag. Your automatically connected to the player of that song. I like your epic. Silence is golden to many I guess.

Hey Calum,

Thanks for listening and commenting on my "lullaby." i'm hoping your comment about it being long enough wasn't sarcasm ...

I am interested in listening to your silence album, have you got a zip of the whole thing I could download somewhere?

Heh, pretty funny comment Calum, but spot on too. Thanks man. the Knack, Devo, Talking Heads, Bowie, and Rocky Horror all influenced that song for sure. Good ears.

I just discovered your silence series via the comment metrics posting in the forums. I am pleased to see that you apparently do not always observe the limitations of conventional music. Though I would not want a standy diet of it, sound art, imho, is a perfectly valid form of music. I have already begun listening to your 'silence album' and will comment each of them; not so much about content or production but about the impressions that I get from them. I'll give you a shout when I'm done. Perhaps you'd be so kind as to do the same on a few of my postings.

Hey.

I definitely wasn't "mad at you" for being able to do multi-track demos - jealous if anything, and probably wishing you lived closer so I could stalk you til you teach me how to do it :D
more than anything I am frustrated because I have literally 7 songs sitting here, and literally NO WAY to record ANYTHING. I had borrowed a video camera off someone else (in order to do an international audition for a dance school back in NZ), so that is my ONLY option is I want to record anything, and I hate that, because I feel like it's not good enough to just do a live recording of me and my guitar. But it's not even my video camera, and I only have it because I'm too broke to get on the tube and get it back to the person I borrowed it off.

I think your post only made me mad cos it made it sound like people would do video tracks on purpose, rather than doing mp3s. The videos I've seen have mostly been because people didn't have a choice. During FAWM, all I had to record was a webcam (it's broken now too), so I turned the video off and used that - but it still came up with a picture, and I have no idea how you'd go about extracting the mp3 from it or anything! I've seen two videos from one person that weren't just them sitting there singing, and in that case I'm fairly certain that they'd put a pretty picture behind the mp3 so that they could use Youtube as a free file-hosting service.

And again, I really only got mad cos I am so limited in options right now!
Plus I'm way over-eager about everything, and sound like I'm really mad when I'm just a little bit upset by most people's standards. "Passionate" is the nice way of putting it :P

Anyway, I hope I didn't upset you, and I hope I didn't scare you away from using the forums, or even just that thread. You do bring valid points to the table, that are definitely worth discussing.

Amy :)

Thank you Calum, love it!

Wow oh wow, I never knew I could sound like that!!!

Calum, I enjoyed your comment on my "The Keeping My Virginity Blues". (-: I think your observation is spot on. In fact, though inspired by that list I mentioned, the lyric could be autobiographical. (-:

Hi Calum, cheers for msg, i think it was 2004 the last time I played OOTB so no, youve prob not seen me around there lately!!! lol, but hopefully after the summer will be going along and booking a slot. Have now managed to get my first song up after 3 computers dying on me within 3 weeks! Crackin on now though :o)

In regards to, "We're Cooking Rice": go for it, man! Whenever you get the demo done is fine by me.

hi Kim, was just chuckling at your slight slip in the Mornington Crescent thread, still, i don't think anybody's going to be able to trace you by just that bit of info.

Heh. It was the #970 bus thing that gives me away. If you compare that route to, say, #971 you can track me down to within a couple of streets. I'm not losing any sleep over that, though. ;)

By the way, i used to live in Kogarah and had a dentist in Rockdale Plaza, and i'm always finding that the world is smaller than i think it is!

I know Kogarah well. I went to the TAFE there, back in the day. I drive through Rockdale every week on my way to and from band practice. I quite often stop at the Rockdale KFC on the way home. Practicing makes me hungry.

Sure do! I have 3 of their albums plus a B-Sides compilation.

Tobermory got me into them, the man's got fine taste.

Thanks for the "Keep Your Shoes On" remarks Calum! Had I had more time harmonizing touches is the first thing I would have done, so I guess great minds think alike! Glad to hear my performance was so pleasing to your ear, as was yours to mine.

100% true. Except for the all-of-it part.

Just added you as Facebook friend (I'm already a fan on your FB music page). I want to see/hear the festival performance!

Hi Calum, I really appreciated your comment on the "complicated sounding chords and melody" in "Leave the Illusion Behind." That's what I was tackling - letting myself expand from the usual into uncharted territory for me. It was a real exploration that made me late on the skirmish, but very rewarding. I'm glad it resonated.

Hi Calum. Thank you so much for your beautiful comment on my A Sappella Challenge "singing". So amazing to hear "cool"! Thank you, you are very kind :)

Thanks dude, I love New Order.

I'll have to catch that Stoppard thing. My wife's actually doing an amateur production of Hamlet, so I should probably read the original source material first to know what the hell's going on in the side story.

Hi Calum! Thanks so much for your kind comments on my collab demo with LPK's "I give to you today" - glad you enjoyed it in its simplicity. Took a trip over to Wikipedia to understand "Horlicks" - so now I not only know what to order in the cafe', but I have a substitute swear word to use in polite UK company, I guess?

Our collab song is up!

Glad to see you on here again, Calum. Always look forward to hearing your new stuff.

Sandbox...go for it. I'm trying still to finish some games music and I know that trying to put music to Sandbox will ruin that totally ...!

Thank you for listening and commenting on "Carefree day" Calum. So glad you like it :)

Hi Calum. If you do decide to join FUC properly and give a uke a new home, you should definitely check out Ukulele Hunt for tips and advice http://ukulelehunt.com/ it's pretty much the best uke site...

Thanks for listening - took your advice and rechristened the song Feel(Through the soles of your feet). Anyway - today is my day off from worrying about global warming so I'm not going to think too much about the apocalyptic songwriting geneology in your family.

No problem with "Full Many A Flower" Calum. The muse has about got my one track mind confounded anyway

Hey Calum,
Just saw your note on Full Many A Flower. I'd be happy to have you try it.
I'm pretty much "puter illiterate". I'll try to get it done right this time.
Thanks H H for clueing me in to Calum's style.
And thanks Donna for clueing me in to FAWM in the first place

This is a "great" place. I'm having a ball and writin' up a storm :)

I got "Hell" listed, with you as collab.I'm still very green at 50/90 though-Why does it say "+2 more" with it? Did I mess something up?

I haven't seen to many Celtic artists. I try to write some Celtic lyrics time to time, though I only have Celtic ancestry, (Welsh).
Anyway, I've got a lyric up that might fit in Celtic, "Full Many A Flower"
If you get time I'd appreciate your opinion on it
Thanks
(Of course if you "hear" anything for it, a collab is open)

yo dude! shall we collab this year? i still have that vino in my fridge that we can get drunk on while we create an opus!

Hey I saw that you wanted to put some music to (What If) I Said That I Loved You. About the style, I pictured it sort of as a ballad, but with a bit of a rock bite. Although I'm sure that whatever you come up with will be great.

Thanks for your comment! The "exterminate" clip actually is from that very episode (which is brilliant, by the way)

Hi Calum, good to see here again!

after commenting on 13:22 saw your note about playing everything in your demos.
there are no words to express how awesome I think you are right now.

Hi! thanks for your lovely comment on "so alone" - I wrote and recorded it in about 12 minutes after a crying jag at 2:30 in the morning (as evidenced by the sniffle halfway through) so that it sounds rough is probably the point. I considered re-recording it yesterday, then decided that I liked it that way.
:)

Darren is quite busy getting the mercantile shop business off the ground. I'll be sure to pop in and nudge Darren on the 5090. OOTB-Colorado is once a month, and has provided me a couple of times with my most-fun audiences ever, venue still floating: this month it's to be a "barn jam" on the 17th.

Hey, Calum. Thanks for the song comment on "Over Jordan." It's fine by me if you want to do your own version of it, but I would suggest that you not listen to my demo first. Make it your own, if you like. You'd probably do better than me.

Hi, Calum. I think we have common acquaintances Darren and Michelle, who recently brought a little piece of OOTB out here to Colorado.

Dude, totally excited to see you here and looking forward to hearing more of your work!

Hi Calum. (-: Sure, I'd love us to do another collaboration. Let's see what the Muse brings me in terms of a lyric, eh? (-:

As to your question: I think I'd asked you to send me your PRS number. You can drop me an email.

hi- great to see you here!

Hi Calum, That would be great. I totally enjoy/respect your skills as a musician/singer/songwriter and I'm looking forward collaborating. I can already tell that it will be one of my highlights this year :)

hey Calum! tour of scotland sounds very exciting! looking forward to whatever you come up with this summer.

Hey Calum :) Looking forward to listening to more of your awesome music.

Hi Calum, excited by 5090 and this spiffy new website. Hope you are well and have music leaking out of your brain for us all to enjoy!
