I've been doing 50/90 since 2012 (I've also taken part in FAWM since the same year).
I didn't take part last year, due to various mental health problems, but I'm back again this year. I'm currently on medication, in therapy, and going through physical and mental decluttering.
I haven't managed to complete 50/90 yet. I think the most I've written during the 90 days is 37 songs.
I did manage to write 50 during this year's FAWM. Out of these 50 songs, I re-recorded 10 of them, and I put out a collection of demos on bandcamp (if you want to check it out - https://petemurphy.bandcamp.com/album/go-dark )
There is a collab with the amazing Liz Frencham on there.
I've been influenced by a lot of new music over the last few months. One of my favourite albums of 2017 was made by a fellow FAWMer (Gravity Wing by Clio Em. Check it out - https://clioem.bandcamp.com/album/gravity-wing-soundtrack )
I also discovered a now defunct record label called OSR Tapes. Their main man is a guy called Zach Phillips, and he's released some incredible lo-fi music, mostly recorded on an 8 track cassette recorder. My favourite album of his is called New Cartoons ( https://zachphillips.bandcamp.com/album/new-cartoons )
I also fell for the music of Dominic Robertson (formerly known as Ergo Phizmiz). His album called The Unreleased Ergo Phizmiz is another of my favourite albums from this year ( https://composterofmusic.bandcamp.com/album/the-unreleased-ergo-phizmiz-volume-one )
I'm currently in the process of recording a cover version of the whole of this album. It's loads of fun to do, and it has the blessing of Mister Robertson himself!
This time around I want to experiment a lot more, and not think too much about traditional song structures or arrangements. I want to make 'incorrect music'.
Although, whenever I make plans in these challenges, it all ends up going out the window after a couple of days...
I hope you all have fun, and reach whatever personal goal you're aiming for.
Collaborations - Happy to do some collabs, but as mentioned in my bio I'm looking to experiment and move away from the standard verse/chorus 3min 30sec pop song structure, and possibly away from the usual themes/subjects. Weird, dark, short, surreal, and atmospheric are the order of the day. If you want to describe your most recent dream in exactly 13 words, or send me your most recent shopping list, or the 3rd word of pages 3, 17, 36, 38, 39, 54, 12, 76, 79, and 105 from the book you're currently reading, that would be great.
