Liner Notes:

Prompt: Special

Yes, my mother still tells people I’m special and buys me feminine clothes three sizes too small…

I tried to add some music.

Lyrics:

V1
no I’m not like you
and I’ll never be
I am not going to live
your fantasy

I’ll never be perky
cute or sweet
that’s not the person
I am meant to be

I won’t wear heels
make up or dress
unless maybe on
Halloween ….

C
I’m tired of you calling me
special….
when we both know what you
really mean

I’m tired of you calling me
special…..
tucked in your closet so
I won’t be seen

no I’m not special …
I’m your big queer butch dyke
lesbian queen

V2
no I’m not the daughter
that you hoped I’d be
but don’t compromise
my dignity

I’ll never be quiet
nice or shy
when there’s injustice
for my family

I’ll keep my hair short
wear a suit and tie
or rainbow tee and jeans
so all can see

C
I’m tired of you calling me
special….
when we both know what you
really mean

I’m tired of you calling me
special…..
tucked in your closet so
I won’t be seen

no I’m not special …
I’m your big queer butch dyke
lesbian queen

B
you have called me different
you have called me a freak
and there were years where
you never called me
and now you say I’m
special….

C
I’m tired of you calling me
special….
when we both know what you
really mean

I’m tired of you calling me
special…..
tucked in your closet so
I won’t be seen

no I’m not special …
I’m your big queer butch dyke
lesbian queen

Very strong lyrics, Liz. Each person is special and unique. I'm sorry if what you wrote really happened. It must have been very hard.

Such a powerful write, Liz! This is really strong and would resonate with many people. That chorus is fantastic ( I mean, except for the part where it's your lived experience) and I love thecinfidence and self assurance in there.

This is a strong and powerful lyric which perfectly targets the way some people camouflage their terminology about what they perceive as 'others'...I worked with adults with learning disabilities for decades and one of my adult children has been out and proud since adolescence and now does a similar job with autistic people and we both agree that referring to fellow human beings as 'special' in this sense, is condescending and ignorant. Of course there are special people in all walks of life but it is not their sexuality or disability that makes them so...it is their inherent goodness and humanity. Well said Liz!

great empowering lyrics with more defiance and standing proud than bitterness, though i hear special being almost spat. i like the clever wordplay of the bridge. nice write
