Liner Notes:

this is a song written years ago for emmylou harris, though i never got a recording to her. i actually worked next door to the restaurant she and her family ate at every thanksgiving. i had a tape (!) of the song with my contact info and actually went to talk to the valet and had money to give him to put it into the car tape player and turn it on so it would play when they got in, but i chickened out at the last minute. who knows what would have come of it, or if i would have simply been fired for the chutzpah. but i couldn't do it-- i couldn't intrude on her sanctity that way.

part of the quarantine sessions: my corona: world enough and lime.

also part of 100/180 that i never posted.

i hope you enjoy.

Lyrics:

(c)1999 time and ink

verse 1

this old world can't keep me down for long now
i'll probably beat it in the end somehow
got this feeling that i can be strong now
just gotta put the needle to my dreams.
been screamin' loud again 'sthe wind the whole time
should let it out and it would come back-- if it was mine
'stead i try to make it fit with the rest of my crimes
don'tcha ever wonder how it ends?

preCH

ah-- how it ends-- no-one knows
and no-one has any idea how it will end.

verse 2

there's no-one in this world to hold me back now
got no ties no kids and no sacred vows
i got this feeling and i can't be wrong now
i can tell things are changing in my bones.
been waiting here upon this fence for so long
so quiet in my head i hear the angels' song
know i shouldn't rush it-- yes, i've got it all
wrong
i just want an answer to my prayers.
preCH

ah-- my prayers-- i need answers
and all that i want's an answer to my prayer.

CHORUS:

ooh-- so let the river flow on
let it sweep me over the edge of the falls.
yes let the wind blow on now
let it push me over the edge of the world.

verse 3

been laughin' out here on this limb all alone
need you for shelter when i've no place-- to call my home
please come quickly don't like myself when i'm alone
should i try and draw the 'raser through my soul?
been caught up in this play, oh my life
been carving out my niche with words as my knife
god wake me soon 'fore i make darkness my wife
just gotta put the lie to my reverie.

CHORUS:

so let the river flow on
let it sweep me over the edge of the falls.
yes let the wind blow on now
let it push me over the edge of the world.
so let the river flow on
let it sweep me over the edge of the falls.
yes let the wind blow on now
let it push me over the edge of the world.

END:

this old world can't keep me down for long now
i'll probably beat it in the end somehow
got this feeling that i can be strong now
just gotta put the needle to my dreams.

I wonder what would have happened? This is so good and I can imagine her singing it. Nice!

I like the percussion, the extra hits give a nice little kick to certain parts of the song. The harmonies are really cool, too!
I lost some of the lyrics at the beginning of the chorus. But the slowdown is interesting and the pickup again afterwards is fun!
Overall a cool listen!

hahaha, what a great story! from the little I know of her(by reputation only.......been told she's a sweetheart) you should of just handed it over yourself, but I understand.. you never know how approachable someone will be, or catching them at just the perfectly wrong moment Smile who knows? coulda woulda shoulda's suck life away, and I'm quite fond of this recording!
excellent performance of an equally excellent tune! man its nice to hear some actual drums Smile those harmonies are killer.... as is everything else about this!!!

The dual guitars is a cool sound. I can totally hear Emmylou singing on this one, really nice harmonies. This reminds me a bunch of Son Volt, powerful tune & lyric.

I listened to this one slowly and carefully, following the lyrics as I did. There's a lot of richness there - the words are full of wisdom in their weariness. I appreciated the swell of the layering (a compliment to the theme of being carried away by fluvial flow) and the energy and pulse from the percussion.
