The Bench at the Top of the World (50/90 Challenge)

Liner Notes:

Kind of interesting how this song came together. First off, I wrote it for a challenge I was trying to organize in a private songwriting group of mine (we all went to a songwriting camp together) to write a song about your favorite place, or spot, or building, or city, or country or whatever... the challenge did not take off and I think I was the only one who did it, but hey, I got a song that I really liked out of it! If anyone else wants to join in, feel free, ha!

Weirdly though, I struggled at first, I knew I wanted to write a song about London (my favorite city) and this particular bench at the top of a hill, which is my favorite spot in the world. But I didn't have specific ideas for the song, so I just wrote a stream of consciousness describing the spot in vivid sensory detail. Still, no ideas except a simple chord progression and a few lines of lyrics, not related to the stream of consciousness. But a few days later (yesterday) I went back to the idea, threw away the whole stream of consciousness, and basically wrote the whole song in one go. It just came to me. I love when this happens! Times like these are the whole reason I keep going with songwriting when it's so hard sometimes <3

Lyrics:

It's always such a struggle to get here
But this is my favorite spot in the world
For daydreaming
And looking out onto the city that I love

Even if some might say it's too much work
Or they'd simply pass it by and they'd take no notice
I'm in it for the long haul, even if it hurts

Meet me on the bench at the top of the world
Meet me on the bench at the top of the world

It's always such a struggle to get here
But this is my favorite city in the world
Sense of belonging, and finally feeling like it's my chance to be heard

Even if some might say it costs too much
Or they simply can't stand all the oppressive crowding
For me I can always see the beauty, it's got that touch

Wow! This is really a strong song. The hook and chorus are so catchy and the message of the song is so uplifting and inviting. It makes me want to come and enjoy the view! Your melody is wonderful - it flows effortlessly - and your vocals and guitar deliver the song with just the right energy. Great pacing and phrasing.
