Liner Notes:

Rough demo. Tried to stay in a pop vein with these lyrics from Crisp1.

Doug: Great pop song, Ed, heading into earworm territory! Thanks!

Thanks for the comments everyone. I had to go out of town, andi I really rushed this demo--vocals are pretty darn pitchy--hearing it later. I always have to sing something about 20 times before it gets more solid. Appreciate everyone looking past that! Especially Doug. I'll take another pass on this one and get the vocal tighter.

Lyrics:

You Were the One

Seemed so simple
Seemed so right
Hit it off so well
You decided to spend the night

About a year late
It’s all wrong
If we stay this way
We ain’t gonna last too long

You were the one…
I thought I could hold on to
You were the one who was gonna
Show me how it could be
You were the one…
I thought I could hold on to
And, baby, I thought you’d hold on to me

There’s no hating
There’s no fight
But the well is dry
We sleep back to back all night

You were the one…
I thought I could hold on to
You were the one who was gonna
Show me how it could be
You were the one…
I thought I could hold on to
And, baby, I thought you’d hold on to me

Now I can’t keep my eyes from wandering
And your eyes may already be on someone else
This love is like a cake that has been left out in the rain
And both of us are watching as it melts

You were the one…
I thought I could hold on to
You were the one who was gonna
Show me how it could be
You were the one…
I thought I could hold on to
And, baby, I thought you’d hold on to me

Boy, I really liked this one. I love a good "breakup" song anyway--which I usually approach in the country genre.

But this is a great treatment in pop vein. VERY nice lyrics and your guitar/vocal really suits them well. Great job, guys!

A very pretty slice of acoustic pop! Strong, catchy lyric (and I smiled at the Jimmy Webb reference in the bridge.) I especially like the melody on "you were the one", and the wordless singing. Really lovely collab, you two.

Oh yes, two of my favourite artists. Smile A fine lyric, Doug, and I love the musical treatment, Ed. Really catchy music, pretty melody. What's not to love. Smile

Lovely, it's kind of a feelgood song about losing the love of your life! Interesting twist, i suppose it needs to be upbeat to be about something like that!
Well, i thought it rocked, loved the chords and melody, and the nice bounce you give the song too.

Wonderful pop rock feel that is perfectly suits the lyrics keeping emotion in them without being melancholy at the loss. Really effective juxtaposition. I love that catchy chorus and the vocal lift on hold on... that is so nicely nuanced!
