Liner Notes:

I have two teenagers exploring love....and of course, love is one of my favorite subjects that I am constantly exploring, myself. I was thinking about how hard and messy love can be, whether it is your first crush or break-up, or a long lasting love that you’ve put lots of work into. Heartbreak is inevitable. We were wired for love...but opening up to it, is also to open ourselves up to pain.

Lyrics:

You love me, you love me not
Sitting here in the last spot
You said, “I love you.”
I thought you’d stay true.
You love me not, you love me so
Wishing I could really know
Which way the wind blew
And how to get through

The messy, ugly side of love
The middle, muddy, muck of love
Where if you hold on tight and don’t let go....
The messy, ugly side of love
The middle, muddy, muck of love
Keep the end in sight and try to show
Love as a verb....you still get hurt

You love me, you love me not
While I keep steady and jot
Down poetry for you...
Could you please stay true?
You love me not, you love me, too
Wishing that we really knew
Which way the wind blew
And how to get through

The messy, ugly side of love
The middle, muddy, muck of love
Where if you fall apart and just let go
The messy, ugly side of love
The middle, muddy, muck of love
Taking baby steps, see if it grows
Love as a seed....you still have needs

When you’ve given up your heart and soul
But you fear that you have lost control
Cut out from the soil
All your petals pulled
That love so real you don’t know how to feel when left alone.....

That messy, ugly side of love
The middle, muddy, muck of love
That leaves a hole so wide you cannot breathe
That messy, ugly side of love
The middle, muddy, muck of love
The end is gone, you’re still alive, but grieve
Love isn’t gone.....you can’t move on....

Oh you really do such a wonderful job exploring the complexities of love in such an insightful and honest way. Your gentle delivery is so beautiful with your fingerpicking and flowing melody. Love your vocals so much!

The messy is real that for sure. I think you’ve captured that reality in a very touching and nurturing way. I instantly gravitated to the melody (I’m a sucker for any song that vibes like Judy Collins). This has all the warmth and assurance of love even when it gets messy.

As attractive as the idea of reliving the glory days of our teenage years might seem, the shocking discovery of impermanence and change - particularly in friendships and, later, relationships - changes us in ways that last a lifetime. "That messy, ugly side of love / The middle, muddy, muck of love" captures that beautifully. A heartbreaking song about heartbreak, yes, but also a song about the recognition that we have to grow and accept it, even when it feels like that's impossible.

A very thoughtful commentary on the joy and mess of love. I like the blue notes that you use every now and then in a middle of the major key. The plant metaphor is cool--seed planted, then cut from the soil and petals pulled.
