The eminent songwriter Bill White asked me to give these lyrics of his a retro work over and this is what happened...

Lyrics:

I used to see you here
Every Saturday night
Sometimes on the dancefloor
Sometimes in the spotlight
I came in just now
To check out the view
Forty years have gone by
Didn’t expect to see you

So dance with me, Donna
I’m buying the next round
I’ll keep my hands above your waist
And I’ll try not to fall down
I’m not the slob I used to be
I’m giving you lots of room
I won’t push your fig
If you don’t pull my prunes

Dance With Me, Donna
Dance With Me, Donna
Dance With Me, Donna
Dance With Me, Donna
Dance With Me, Donna
Neath the emerald Moon

You always were my favorite
Girl in the back up choir
The way you sang, the way you moved
Was hotter than a fire
Sorry I got out of hand
And overstepped my bounds
But the way you shook those peaches
Could make a bullfrog hump a hound

Dance With Me, Donna
Dance With Me, Donna
Dance With Me, Donna
Dance With Me, Donna
Dance With Me, Donna
Neath the emerald Moon

I know you can’t forgive me
For the things I used to do
I kissed you in front of your lover
Then I kissed your lover too
Donna I still love you now
As I loved you way back then
But I tried to be your lover
Before I was your friend

So dance with me, Donna
This is the last dance of the day
When the music’s over
There’s gonna be hell to pay
The living will stand down
And the rotten dead will rise
And no more shall I gaze
Into your tired, emerald eyes

Dance With Me, Donna
Dance With Me, Donna
Dance With Me, Donna
Dance With Me, Donna
Dance With Me, Donna
Neath the emerald Moon

Dance With Me, Donna

So glad you approve Bill...I wasn't sure how this would end up but I guess it went the way it wanted to...

Wow - love the accordion and Cajun feel. Lyrics fab - I laughed at "kissed you in front of your lover/Then I kissed your lover too." And the figs, peaches, prunes, bullfrogs ... masterful wordplay!

Gwyn Jones's picture

That's really good of you to say...thanks...yep Bill is a master wordsmith!

Oh yeah, this is FUN! Really captures the zydeco vibe - feels like I'm at Tipitinas. (And you know if it's dance music, I'm gonna love it!)

I saved this song to listen to all day because I knew it would be like a good dessert and it did not disappoint. So many great lines in the lyrics ("I won't push your fig if you don't pull my prunes" is a particular favorite)! Love the rock 'n roll & zydeco flavor. Kudos to both of you--another tune I couldn't resist dancing to!

I'm so pleased that it didn't disappoint and that you had a dance...thank you so much!

Wow! Two of my favorites working to create such a great song! Love your lyrics, Bill, and the perspective of this bold and insightful Romeo! And Gwyn, your music is perfect! I love your vocal delivery of the hook! Such a fun d-d-d-d-dance song!!!!!

Great, great job! I really need to give cajun a try--two of my 3 songs went to school at Tulane, so I've been to New Orleans a bunch of times. Love music.

When I review Bill, it is generally to comment on his performances...so it's nice to see just lyrics from him and gain a greater appreciation of that facet of his talent.

Gwyn, I love your country stuff--but this is super-great!!

Thanks so much Jerry! Bill's words seem to send me down this route...

Nice little zydeco track, love the way youǘe done this, with the accordion and mandolin. Really works out nicely imho. And of course the lyrics are perfect for this kind of treatment, a love song that sounds 100% honest, set to good time home made party time music.

What a brilliant response...thank you so much Calum!

This is hot, what else to say? I'm getting kind of sweaty just sitting here. Are those live drums?
