Liner Notes:

Here we call this style Pro Soldier - Anti War. The first world war was really the making of us as an independent nation so its a big deal

My favourite genre. I am just starting an EP and am going to try and do it all this week. Had lots of bits all around that i am pulling together. This one is almost there, there is one word wrong darm it Before counter atttack it should be they'll not we'll!

If you dont know Bully beef is tinned corned beef and the soldiers lived on this and hot cups of tea!

Lyrics:

The captain blew his whistle
It was relayed down the line
We had waited for the big push
Now it was that time

Over the parapet we all went
Wondering what comes next
The man goes down beside me
Looking frightened and perplexed

Will we all sit and laugh tonight
Eating bully beef and drinking sweet tea
Or will we lie in no mans land
and be tomorrows obituary

The bloody ragged barbed wire
It Sticks to me like glue
But with one big final lurch
I finally make it through

The rat tat tat it deafens me
But onwards i must go
The bodies are pilling up now
And i keep my head down low

Will we all sit and laugh tonight
Eating bully beef and drinking sweet tea
Or will we lie in no mans land
and be tomorrows obituary

We hit the line and the enemy runs
We have our victory today
They’ll be cheering at headquarters
Not counting the price we had to pay

Tomorrow i guess they’ll counter attack
Well go back from whence we came
Then give us just a few days
And well do it all again

Will we all sit and laugh tonight
Eating bully beef and drinking sweet tea
Or will we lie in no mans land
and be tomorrows obituary

Beautiful historical song, very inspiring and poignant. Love the vocal harmonization and the echo effect. Beautiful singing and playing.

My sons are history and political science majors so we have a lot of discussions that sometimes are about military history, so I enjoyed your lyric. Really nice folky tune that has great forward motion.

What a great history lesson mixed with an intimate look. That echo is so effective. Good one!

really nice harmonies with yourself on the chorus. one of my favoriite directors of war movies once said that all war movies are anti war.. it is rare to find someone who knows war first hand to be pro war. i love to hear their stories, but can not identify myself as pro soldier.. i side wth buffy sainte marie, who sang "without him how would Hitler Have condemned him at Dachau Without him Caesar would have stood alone
He's the one who gives his body as the weapon of the war And without him all this killing can't go on" but i am also quite fond of Waltzing Matilda and your No Mans Land.

I get you, if you remember i did universal soldier for rocktober a couple of years ago. Perhaps pro soldier is not how i would put it, but its the name here. Its not pro soldier as much as not blaming them, i really don’t believe that soldiers of the first 2 world wars practically had the opportunity to say no, which i mention in the song. Buffy, a very underestimated artist, came from a Very different time when we rightly started asking the right questions.

Redgum vibes. Enjoyed the harmonies over the chorus, and how despite it having an almost jaunty tune overall, the chord progressions are sad sounding matching the lyrics, which I suppose was the idea.
