Gebed vir Afrikakind-Marthie Nel Hauptfleisch-Woman On Fire

Liner Notes:

at our walk this morning we were talking about the impact of COVID on our economy- but also the poor- families feeding their children leaves and vegetation that locally grows in their community because it is all they have to eat: no more food. Poor really gets poorer. Corrupt government who are so good at stealing money- it's easier than handing it out in food packets. (Private ppl are not supposed to start food banks or food handouts in their communities because it has to be 'centralized'...) My kids are wondering what their future look like here... Many questions.
I don't have answers. This one prayer does not even scratch the surface of the many layers of any child who goes hungry and grows up to be disillusioned adults(that is if they grow up). How do you capture that?
I wanted this to be a happy song but it is not. Maybe hope starts from the bottom of a solid foundation of being down in the dumps being covered with dirt and ashes before you can rise...

Prayer for African child

Cherish the child
(Let him discover)That love is an embrace
Listen and find
That love has an ear and a hand,
Because what is a child without prayer?
A child must have a father.

In Africa we learn to carry our neighbor
In Africa we learn there is love there.

Our Father
Take good care of this child
Walk out in front of him
Give him direction on the roads that seem lost.

Our Father
Take good care of this child
Open the doors
Give the opportunity for hope: just plenty.

Our Father
Take good care of this child
Give the answers
on all the thousand questions in his head.

Our Father
Take good care of this child
Give his hungry stomach bread
And for his rejected heart yet love…

Cherish him…
Cherish him…
Cherish the child
A nurtured child grows up
In Africa.

Lyrics:

Gebed vir Afrikakind

Koester die kind
Dat liefde ‘n omhelsing is
Luister en vind
Dat liefde ‘n oor en ‘n hand het,
Want wat is ‘n kind sonder ‘n gebed?
‘n kind moet tog ‘n Vader het.

In Afrika leer ons ons naaste dra
In Afrika leer ons daar’s liefde daar.

Onse Vader

Onse Vader
Pas hierdie kind mooi op
Gee vir sy honger maag brood
En vir sy verwerpte hart tog liefde…

Koester hom…
Koester hom…
Koester die kind
‘n gekoesterde kind word groot
In Afrika.

the song is beautiful but the poverty and corruption is hopeless, and even in the best years there is little hope for such children to flourish. we can help to alleviate some degree of temporal suffering, but the seemingly endless pain will return on the following day, and it continues. every day here in peru where i see the long lines of misery pass before my window as i sit safely removed from the surrounding sorrow.

I always find it difficult to write a song about this kind of thing. You've handled it very appropriately though, well done. Really tragic to hear about that situation, though, especially when it is caused by corruption and greed rather than circumstance.
