Liner Notes:

This was a 'skirmish' where you have one hour, more or less, to write and record something to a specific title or prompt- in this case it was a title- 'snake in the grass'. I , of course, started thinking about the political meanings, applied not just to the US politics of the moment but more generally, perhaps. This kind of wrote itself, based musically on a minor-key descending bassline kind of bluesy thing. I'm kind of happy with the bridge, which was musically semi-improvised and sort of came together.. I was wondering, how do I get back to the V !

Recorded quick to the iPhone using music memos (which adds some rudimentary drums if you want) and then quickly mastered in audacity. One take, guitar and vocal together.

Lyrics:

There’s a snake in the grass, his name is fear
Slithering slowly, making reason disappear
Moving surreptitiously like poison gas
There’s a snake, a snake in the grass
look carefully/ you can see/snake in the grass

There’s a snake in the grass, called nationalism
Displaying his flag like a shiny prism
Raising jingoistic slogans to a critical mass
There’s a snake, a snake in the grass
look carefully/ you can see/snake in the grass

There’s a snake in the grass, called ‘blame the refugee’
With dog whistles of racism and bigotry
Columbus was his hero in history class
There’s a snake, a snake in the grass
look carefully/ you can see/snake in the grass

Snakes arrive on the wings of apathy/covered in crosses and fake Christianity
But every religions value of humanity/knows that snake is just a profanity

There’s a snake in the grass, stirring up discontent
With the fable we can all be in that one percent
Saying why should I pay taxes, I need a free pass
There’s a snake, a snake in the grass
look carefully/ you can see/snake in the grass

There’s a snake in the grass, with an orange complexion
With the fascists of old he’s got a connection
Down in the dirt, near the underpass
There’s a snake, a snake in the grass
look carefully/ you can see/snake in the grass

Moving surreptitiously like poison gas....such a great line...and the delivery just sounds snake-like

really well done! I like the bridge too Wink sometimes the best come back-to's are the ones that come from nowhere haha

Wow, very good. Such a lot of lyrics in such a short time for writing. I was wondering if you would do something political and you certainly did! Prism and nationalism is a very good rhyme. Good writing.

That's a lot there for a skirmish! Nice rhymes and rhyme scheme, flows naturally but not predictably. I like the line about the 1% being available to, oh, I don't know, the hard core 30%?

Good rhythm in both the guitar and the vocal. I like your vocal delivery on this one, Mike. Of course, I had a feeling which way you'd go with this, although I didn't nail it spot on. Good skirmish!

Damn, that's pretty f***ing awesome! So catchy! That bassline line sounds like a snake charmer. Apropos as that's seems to be what's happened. Think for yourselves already! A definite keeper I think. Smile

Gorgeous song Mike. It draws the listener right in. Hypnotic! If anyone says to me that it is impossible to create a fantastic song in one hour I know what song to show to them! Fantastic work for sure!

This definitely has an all-at-once hook to it. There's a quite a bit of ideology to unpack, but you've inserted it with so much bounce and precision. Pretty dope, my man! Like that finish, too! Smile
