Liner Notes:

Louisiana State penitentiary had a fearsome reputation for its brutal regime. This song is about an inmate who dreams of his girlfriend and for escape. The penitentiary is known as Angola and the Red Hat is where the particularly tough prisoners were housed, there hats were painted red so the guards could identify them more easily. The Gruesome Gertie was the electric chair, housed alongside the Red Hat and originally it was mobile because state law said prisoners must be executed in the district in which their crime was committed. The law later changed so executions took place at Angola.

The verses are OK for a traditional 12 bar blues chord progression. I've added a bridge and chorus. Anyone want to have a go at it, just let me know.

Lyrics:

Angola Prison Dream

Verse 1
I see a crimson sun rise through the morning mist
Swirling over cane fields, the ones where we first kissed
I hold you in my arms again this Louisiana dawn

Verse 2
The jailer’s baton on the bars breaks my sweet recall
Yells at us to move ourselves, we’ve got some dirt to haul
It’s a bitter-sweet arrival of the Angola prison dawn

Chorus:
I’m dashing through a cotton field
With a posse after me
Then I find a boxcar
I ride it till I’m free
But then I wake and find it’s just
The Angola prison dream

Bridge:
They’ll send me to the Red Hat if they catch me on the run
Let Gruesome Gertie fry me or maybe use a gun

Verse 3
Digging in the levee from can’t see to can’t see
Doin’ three to thirty in this penitentiary
Makes me wish I’d never seen a Louisiana dawn

Chorus:
I’m dashing through a cotton field
With a posse after me
Then I find a boxcar
I ride it till I’m free
But then I wake and find it’s just
The Angola prison dream

Vivid imagery. Very good writing.
I did some Land Survey work on the ring levees around Angola in the 90's. Security was pretty extreme. It was interesting and a little scary.A self contained society.
