Demo:

Liner Notes:

Song 3 of 28 on a theme.

My singing is not the best tonight, I might try redoing the vocals in the morning. (I'm noticeably off pitch in a few places.) I'm overtired for a number of reasons. But I wanted to write and post something tonight.

---
EDIT: 1 pm CDT the next day: That vocal line was so bad I had no choice but to retake it. This one is way better. Please listen again.

Lyrics:

Consider well
What you have learned
Mull it about
Knowledge you've earned

Consider well
What came before
Mull it about
Ere you leave shore

There's a history
To everything
Learn the history
And you begin to understand

Connect the dots
From this to that
Make useful links
Where things have sat

Connect the dots
And you might see
Make useful links
How things could be

There's a history
To everything
Learn the history
And you begin to understand

Consider well
Connect the dots
Mull it about
Make useful links
Dig in deep
Hold on tight
Say your prayers
Try to sleep at night...

There's a history
To everything
Learn the history
And you begin to understand

This has a very good melody. Haunting and memorable. It matches the lyrics well. I like the change towards the end and also how the guitar keeps the song moving along.

I really like how the singing, chord progression, and melody reflects the angst of the mulling process and all of the layers to work through.

Has a bit of a prayer chain feel with those open ringing strings! Nice riff and great Lyrics

Given the current state of the world, Alex, I think you can be forgiven for not sleeping well or being tired. Absolutely the same here.

PItchy or not, your vocals get the message across and convey the emotional context of the lyrics. The song rolls along nicely with that guitar playing, too - that interesting chord progression and the insistent rhythm really made my ears prick up.

Nice guitar groove you lay down here--it has me moving. The message speaks to me in a perverse way, because I'm trying to write a song about how I can't remember anything from all the books I've read. Smile

I caught this after you re-recorded the vox. Sounds great to me. Like HFO, I really enjoyed the guitar chord progression. The lyrics are very thought provoking. Great job Alex!

See You In The Shadows…

p.s. Hope you're rested up Smile

As a History teacher I appreciate the sentiment of this song. I think your vocal on this is good - it has more of a mournful and yearning sound that some of your other work I've heard on FAWM. I really enjoyed listening to this - like something from a Nick Drake album.

That last line is so well written. Some folks in this world would do good to listen to those words. Great tune
