Liner Notes:

There's a lot of fancy stuff I could do with this setup, but I kept it simple for the sake of a quick demo. I can see harmonica in this track's future...

Lyrics:

I was born as a ditch you could clear with a leap
Full of rain, full of nothing, and the nothing ran deep
And you’d wade through the trench, and you wouldn’t not care
But honey, I would build you a bridge over there

I grew into a field you could trudge right through
And I’ll never be a vision or a garden view
But I cleared back the brush and I worked with the place
And I built you a house in the space, in the space

What’s the point of carving your name in bark
When it’s already written all over my heart?
I was nothing, but look at what I became
When I built myself up from your name, from your name

-

I had hands that could hit, I decided to create
When I got to a fence, then I knocked out a gate
I’ve a roof when it rains, and there’s rooms in the halls
And darlin’, I will wrench up all four walls

I’m not easy to reach, but I’m ready to begin
At a shave and a haircut I can let you in
I don’t know the first thing about making stuff last
But I reckon if you want to, you should start with the past

What’s the point of carving your name in bark
When it’s already written all over my heart?
I was nothing, but look at what I became
When I built myself up from your name, from your name

-

I had little good to work with when I made my choice
But I wanted to be worth any call in your voice
If you want me to come, then I know what I’ll do
‘Cos I wasn’t made for loving but I still love you

You are stubborn and you’re good and you hiked my way
And you spotted my potential and you chose to stay
You are proud and put-together, but you’ve always sworn
That you loved me as a ditch from the day we were born

What’s the point of carving your name in bark
When it’s already written all over my heart?
I was nothing, but look at what I became
When I built myself up from your name, from your name

When I built myself up from your name, from your name

When I built myself up from your name
From your name

great lyric great start so you just want to hear the rest, then delivered in that unique style, with nice harmonies

This is just gorgeous. I can definitely hear more instruments in here (harmonica for sure, and I'm also hearing some fiddle), but the simple delivery works really well, too! It's sweet without being saccharine, and your word choice is spot-on, as usual. I always envy your gift for vocal harmonies - the layers here are beautiful!

Such good lyrics here. Love the natural metaphors charting the progression of a relationship as well as the the sweet harmonies on the chorus. A top-notch love song!

That was so good. Your writing style and vocals are really unique and pretty great.

Cool tune, sounds good. But I’d love to meet this person, this other, who are they? Glad they decided to stay. And stopped carving their name here and there, hopefully. I like the contrast between the 2 people, the hard worker and the just-showed-up..
