Liner Notes:

@wacha put up a cool challenge using a horror movie title. Mine was Martyr and this is what I wrote.

Lyrics:

Whiskey Martyr
(c) 2020 Deanna Sweidel

It didn’t start this way
It never really does
She wishes it’d go back
To the love that once there was

He picked up the bottle
When the kids were very young
She’s taken all the punches
So her babies don’t get stung

She’ll protect them with her life
And with that she has to barter
So his anger stays on her
She’s become his whiskey martyr

She’s tried so many times
To get them out the door
But every time she does
He knocks her to the floor

He’s emptied every bottle
Spent everything they own
Now she’s hiding what she got
Hoping that he never knows

She’ll protect it with her life
And with that she has to barter
So his anger stays on her
She’s become his whiskey martyr

Someday she’ll have the strength
Someday she’ll have the funds
She prays he doesn’t kill her
Before she can grab the kids and run

She’ll protect them with her life
And with that she has to barter
So his anger stays on her
She’s become his whiskey martyr

Tough subject matter but you’ve done it well. The title is an interesting twist to the underlying lyrics. Not quite what I was expecting When I clicked the link, but that’s why one should never assume. Great write.

You got right to the heart of the matter Deanna. This gave me a hard swallow. I have known battered women in my life, and your words do them justice.

Wow, these are such powerful lyrics! Really nice job with the prompt!

You're written a horror story that really happens - without any special effects. Great take on the prompt

It's so weird that just as I'm reading the lyrics, this movie on TCM just showed a drunken guy knock a woman to the floor! ("Written on the Wind")
