Liner Notes:

@otagoseaburial's clear explanation as to how the current Australian university system operates. Original is at http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/song/41922 but I made so many changes and reversions to the original I got lost. I don't think these lyrics are much different from the original, but still...

WE WERE CAREFUL
Lyrics Copyright © 2020 Andrew Male Music Copyright © 2020 TJ Fatchen All Rights Reserved APRA-AMCOS

We kept the kids indoors last year
We kept them in their rooms
Conducted education with
Facebook, dodgy Zooms

But all the time we taught them
We saw the main contribution
To all the success, All the passed tests
Comes down to the right institution

Now one of them's a surgeon
And one has a law degree
The oldest's won the Nobel Prize
The youngest's done all three

As parents we were careful
That our kids had all the best
We discovered online courses
And soon our lives were blessed

Universities in Tombola
Academies on Mars
Lecture notes from Neptune
Mentors beamed from stars

Now one of them's a surgeon
One has a law degree
The oldest's won the Nobel Prize
The youngest's done all three

[INSTR]

Now one of them's a surgeon
One has a law degree
The oldest's won the Nobel Prize
The youngest's done all three

You’re welcome to our secret
It’s clear before the nation
The key to success, wealth, happiness?
Just buy,
Just buy their qualifications.

the future setting enables some ripping satire on present circumstances.nothing like looking back on the present. i fear comedy will become obsolete in the near future if we continue on the course of viewing a comic point of view as a hate crime due to its possibility of offending somebody. your tale begins in all seriousness, then the escalation of the absurd takes over. the final verse steps outside the narrative in true music hall style with an a punchline suggesting education and success is all about cheating, i had the good fortune to catch an eric idle concert about 15 year ago, and this us the funniest song i have heard sice.

God, Eric Idle! That means a hell of a lot to me. Thanks Bill, you’ve made my century.

"Down by the Old Diploma Mill Stream"

Eric Idle, sure, but also Tom Lehrer's very academic music hall approach.

I love everything about this one! The music hall Tom Lehrer quality of the lyrics, the piano solo, the expressive vocal performance... it's all wonderful. Plus as an American and a teacher and someone who has been furious at the way wealth and privilege interact with education and opportunity in this country, the social commentary really strikes home. I want to punch something... in a good way.
