Make Time
Post date:

Liner Notes:
I am a huge fan of Bryan Stevenson, JD, human rights and justice advocate, founder/executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, Clinical Professor of NYU School of Law, and author of Just Mercy - an amazing account of his incredible work. I have had the privilege to meet him and hear him speak. His message is powerful, inspiring and motivating. He has worked for equal justice for people and populations impacted by injustices based on their race, mental health, and young age. Through his work and in his talks he challenges us to be proximate, to change the narrative, to do what is inconvenient, and to stay hopeful.
This song is meant to be an anthem call to action for our time to promote justice based on his work and message. I hope the words do it justice and I would love to have a collaborator consider putting this to music.
Lyrics:
Make Time
V1
times of
oppression
have lingered
for years
times of
injustice
have heightened
the fears
times of
abuses
have prompted
more tears
times of
denial
have conveyed
false care
PC1
and now
we must make time....
make time to hear .....
C
we must be proximate to those in need
do what is inconvenient
sow the seeds
of mercy
we must stay hopeful to impact change
change the narrative
let truth reign
for justice
we must take time to
show respect and grace,
compassion and care
for the human race
V2
times of
selfishness
have created
the poor
times of
discrimination
have boarded
up doors
times of
arrogance
have opened
old sores
times of
domination
have ignited
the wars
PC2
and now
we must make time...
make time to do more .....
C
we must be proximate to those in need
do what is inconvenient
sow the seeds
of mercy
we must stay hopeful to impact change
change the narrative
let truth reign
for justice
we must make time to
show respect and grace,
compassion and care
for the human race

this is wonderful. I love the second verse particularly (maybe swap the verses making the second one first? its stronger, I think, and more direct, ) excellent- and so much wisdom in all that, let's hope that more and more people have these types of thoughts...and actions.
You've done a clever thing with the anaphora in the verses - the repeated idea of our 'times'; times we are swept up in and cannot control, only live in... but then you use the same word in the chorus to refer to something that we have and is in our power to use. We really can make these troubled times a time of kindness. An inspiring song.
True and fair. I'm inspired.
I like how you emphasize certain words by giving them more space... like mercy and justice.
