Liner Notes:

The brutal murder of George Floyd at the hands of police after a series of other similar horrific events and growing displays of racial injustice ignited many protests across our county and world calling for an end to police brutality and racial injustices. Sadly Wisconsin is the most segregated state in the country with multiple indicators of significant inequities in health, economic , educational, and legal outcomes between whites and Blacks. Madison, WI was the site of many protests supporting the Black Lives Movement and White Coats for Black Lives movement. Many of the protests were peaceful but some turned more violent.

Concerns about property damage during protests arose but must pale in comparison to the outrage we must feel about the ongoing racism that has demoralized and destroyed the lives of Black individuals and communities in this country for centuries. I tried to capture that in the song.

The chorus is literally made up of words painted on plywood of boarded up businesses in town. Seeing block after block of these messages of anger, frustration, hope, and love is motivating and inspiring. As a white woman of power and privilege I recognize that I might have missed the mark in this song but the word “silence is compliance” gave me the desire and strength to try. Open to suggestions and feedback as well as to collaborations!

Lyrics:

V1
shattered window storefronts
fallen statues in the streets
street blockades and fires
riots throughout town
where pepper spray and tear gas
cloud and scatter voices
that must be heard
and on the morning after
there are angry eyes, haunted souls,
heavy hearts and
painted plywood words

C
unity justice
peace understanding love
Black lives matter
when is enough enough
silence is compliance
respect empower include
we will rise together
let Black lives bloom
let them bloo..ooo..oom....

V2
captured shackled victims
broken Black men in the fields
frightened women and children
tortured and abused
where freedom never was equal
as at hands of privilege
injustice prevailed
while those in power
wrongly accused and enslaved
all those without
in overcrowded jails

C
unity justice
peace understanding love
Black lives matter
when is enough enough
silence is compliance
respect empower include
we will rise together
let Black lives bloom
let them bloo..ooo..oom....

B
history provides perspective
only when narratives are true
and truth brings power to transform
through what we say and do

C
unity justice
peace understanding love
Black lives matter
when is enough enough
silence is compliance
respect empower include
we will rise together
let Black lives bloom
let them bloo..ooo..oom....

you absolutely captured a moment and a movement, and this is really impressive- excellent lyric! great subject as well, of course.

I had a conversation with a couple a few years back regarding the ending of racism. It was a very interesting conversation.

Very powerful and what a stroke of genius to use the words you had seen sprayed in your community! That makes it all more real lyrically and supports your phrase of Let Black Lives Bloom, which is epic in itself
