My first song!

The lyrics need a lot of work as does the vocal, but I'm happy with the general mood of the song.

I remember an old teacher of mine way back in the early 70s her name was Mrs. Russel. A rather elderly lady who was very kind who always told us good stories. I was about 8 or 9 years old and I always loved the different seasons. Here in England we could get all four seasons in one day. My favourite being Halloween. Mrs. Russel would get us to paint Witches on broomsticks and our paintings hung on the classroom wall.

Lyrics:

SCHOOLDAYS

V1
On a dark and grey rainy Monday morning
My first day back at school, It all seemed somehow new
The puddles beckoned me but I held my sisters hand
She led me in, I tried to grin
My nerves played up and I showed it

Pre-Chorus
The teacher smiled and all my dread replaced
A sense of calm, a feeling of grace

Chorus
Schooldays were the best days of our lives
Time to learn, time to play
Imagination stimulates
We made our friends, we made our dreams
In our rush to get old, we lost just what that means
I remember who we were, back in those schooldays

V2
Children in the playground playing out their games
It seems so long ago, their stories to be told
Though some have left us we keep them in our hearts
Thats the price we pay for love, each and every one of us

Pre-Chorus
I remember the paintings on the classroom wall
I remember the teachers who enabled them all

Chorus
Schooldays were the best days of our lives
Time to learn, time to play
Imagination stimulates
We made our friends, we made our dreams
In our rush to get old, we lost just what that means
I remember who we were, back in those schooldays

Pre-Chorus
I was so full of life, I was so happy
Flash Gordon in the morning and Sheperds Pie for tea

Chorus Outro
Thank you all the teachers that taught us so much
Planted that seed, ignite us with a spark
'Great Expectations' to 'Fellowship of the Ring'
'Swallows and Amazons' to 'Huckleberry Finn'
They were all started by you.

The mood of the song and your singing matches well with the lyrics. This feels like a joyous and heartfelt appreciation for your old teachers. A very sweet and feel-good song!

What a wonderful story, Billy, with details that are relatable to many. A lot of great lines. Among them 'We made our friends, we made our dreams/
In our rush to get old, we lost just what that means'. Vocals and music so pleasing to the ear.

You've done Mrs Russel and other teachers proud. Smile

after reading your liner notes, i didnt expect this to be so good. love the production and the vocals are first rate. if elton john and david bowie wrote a song together, it might come out something like this.

Nice reflective track, lots of lyrical detail that paints your memories as something more personal. The music is fittingly sentimental, especially the added strings. The pre-chorus is awesome and goes into the chorus super well, it subtly picks up in vocal intensity. The ending is a very crafty bit also, great listen!

Beautiful song Billy, sounds like a showtune to me. I like your lyrics and musical delivery. Very nice instrumentation. Sweet memories.

Classic it is!

That instrumentation is so grand. And the lyrics raise a good point! Are we still in rush to get somewhere or do we realize the meaning of here and now?

Great job!

Enjoyed the emotion in the vocal. Poignant lyrics. Great imagery. Nice work.

Great production a bit Beatles like at the start. A very good autobiographical song. Reminds me a little of Squeeze and their storytelling. Nicely positive and kind lyrics. Very good song. Good emotional and sincere vocals.
