Then what

Maddie and I have a deep mutual respect for each other as songwriters, even though most of the time we're writing about vastly different sorts of things, so we don't often get to collaborate. When I saw that Maddie had posted a lyric open for collabs that was along the sort of lines that I like to write to, I knew I had to ask about it, so I did, and here you go.

I wasn't quite able to go for the pop ballad feel that Maddie had suggested with her original tags on the lyric post (*39574), but I'm pretty happy with the maj7 chords giving a sense of wistful/sad/aching to the lyrics. Hope you enjoy this too!

Lyrics:

1, How come we are so distant when all I want is to be near
You know all my secrets, you can sense my fear
Was it when I walked away
In rage the other night
Was it when I fell asleep
And forgot to say good night

Ch
If we walk away now, then what?
If we have nothing to say now, then what?
When we don´t speak anymore
When our hearts did hit the floor
When there’s silence in between
Then what?
….Then what?

2, I can still feel our very first kiss
I can think of thousand things I´ll miss
But now the darkness in my heart
Screams higher
You are no longer the one
To light my fire

But

Ch
If we walk away now, then what?
If we have nothing to say now, then what?
When we don´t speak anymore
When our hearts did hit the floor
When there’s silence in between
Then what?
….Then what?

Bridge
How come the simple became hard
When I am standing here on the loves church yard
I don’t know what to do anymore
Exept for walking out trough that door

But …
Ch
If we walk away now, then what?
If we have nothing to say now, then what?
When we don´t speak anymore
When our hearts did hit the floor
When there’s silence in between
Then what?
….Then what?

good rhythm on the guitar keeps the song moving along nicely. i like what metalfoot does with the bridge. he also implies the space left after the repeated question.....and i believe this is the only significant qustion to be asked after the shattering of one phase of a persons life...then what? now that all is gone, what comes next? you have to be careful about how you fill this emptiness because you are laying the foundation for the next chapter of your life.

I appreciate the maj7 chords.
This has a feel that I like, like the stuff that got me into indie/alt music back in the mid 2000s.
Sway back and forth type feel. The strumming style and vocal delivery lend to that.
Strong chorus, well-written for musicality.

Has a 70's easy listening feel to the strumming and vocal melody. Lyrics on their own have a very intense sense of inner turmoil. The music mellows that sense a bit and makes it more casual, yet again, makes for easy listening.

Ah, yes--nothing like a maj7 chord. They truly "Color My World". Wink

Beautiful lyrics, Maddie--and, as the others mention, metalfoot has done a nice driving guitar bed and really nice vocal for this. Great collab! Do more!!
