Liner Notes:

Composed this at the office during skirmish time, after a bit of overtime work today. This came out of the blue and asserted itself in a much less fussy way than I usually write. I haven’t been singing and I had trouble even making sound at times, but in the end I think that fit where this piece is coming from. There’s some personal meaning behind it, but I wonder if it will even make sense to anyone but me. It’s okay if it doesn’t, because this was just a log unjamming exercise that surprised me. Spent about an hour extra splitting up two long continuous vocal takes to create alternating verse/chorus. That’s challenging on an iphone! Posting had to wait until after restorative yoga classz

Lyrics:

Whispering in the wind
Whispering in the wind
Knowing it’s not doing any good

Whispering in the wind
Whispering in the wind
Knowing it’s not doing any good

Since I left, I’ve learned a lot
Things I wish I’d known
Now I watch you follow suit
Falling down the path alone

I don’t expect you’ll ever stop
My words were never good enough
A dreadful roar, a piercing howl
At least the mating sounds of owls

Whispering in the wind
Whispering in the wind
Knowing it’s not doing any good

Whispering in the wind
Whispering in the wind
Knowing it’s not doing any good

Is this the only tool I’ve got?!
I want to shake you, and wake you up
...I don’t expect
you’ll ever stop

To reach you, make you understand
I didn’t have a clue
Remove the heavy rules I taught
O let your heart shine through!

Whispering in the wind
Whispering in the wind
Knowing it’s not doing any good

Whispering in the wind
Whispering in the wind
Knowing it’s not doing any good

I love the constant heart beat underlying this and the low drones as the rather exotic feeling foundation for the wonderful lyric. It has an evocative kind of honest introspective feel as the scenario of a love lost plays on in the thoughts of one’s mind. The emotion builds beautifully with the last few stanzas. Wonderfully nuanced and delivered with your gorgeous vocals.

really evocative and captivating. the musical setting works perfectly with that dramatic 'low-burning' vocal, and the whole thing works well - lyric is worthy of the intensity of the music and vice versa... great work!

slightly reminds me (from a melody perspective) of some old richard and linda thompson (do you know them at all?)

That's a super hypnotic vibe you've got going on. That steady drum was super chill and relaxing. Held my attention nicely.
Yeah, this might be super personal, but that chorus is universal. I kinda inserted my own thoughts/issues into the verses rather than paying attention to yours. I mean, I did pay attention to yours! I hope you understand what I mean. Hahaha! Smile It's like a way to work on stuff individually and together all at once. Cool.

I am happy I can hear this now. I almost feel as if I am in a trance. So powerful, hypnotic, excellent! Wonderful skirmish!

Loved this at the very start...awesome instrumental! Your vocal didn't disappoint - very emotional. The lyric is haunting and well written. The overall prosody is absolutely fantastic. This is beautiful in every aspect. Hypnotizing!

The atmosphere to this is felt.
Great pads.
Minimal percussion.
Arrangement, sound choices, and vocal delivery all work together to make this a great listen for me.
I did not attempt to analyze the meaning, I simply enjoyed the music and the words as they were sung.
The vocal delivery adds to this so much. Vulnerable and real.
Highly enjoyed this.

I like when songs just kinda appear with minimal input from me.
I'm enjoying the minimal instrumentation; it really showcases your atmospheric vocals.
Wow, yeah, this is great; I'm really enjoying i!
Super great work, Barbara!!

I love the minimal instrumentation--your voice sounds amazing and mesmerizing when it first shows up against that almost-empty background. This is really gorgeous and sad, it feels almost like a lost This Mortal Coil or Cocteau Twins track without all the processing. Wonderful song!
