Liner Notes:

Prompt: Hotel

Met up with an old friend last week where she was staying in a cool old new hotel that I did not know even existed in Madison. It was, as the lyrics say, created in an old paint warehouse for a local paint company and is fully of wonderful artifacts and has a great industrial chic feel. I liked it so much that I took my wife there last night to see it. If you are ever in Madison, I recommend it! I have been thinking about the hotel so chose hotel as a prompt and then tried to write about it. So the song is based in facts although I have never actually slept there yet. Someday!

Lyrics:

Hotel Indigo

V1
a nineteen forties warehouse
of an old paint factory
five stories of red bricks
filled with vibrant history
once left vacant to ruin
another urban cavity
until it birthed a new hotel
on East Washington Street

PC
with palettes of rainbow drinks
and pillows of moonbeams

C
now I lie there in bed
at this new historic hotel
listening for life lessons
that it’s old bricks tell
about bold colors of love
that forever dwell
in rich hues of hearts
and souls of ourselves

keys open rooms
into hearts and souls
at Hotel Indigo

V2
there are framed photographs
vintage painted memories
paint rollers and used brushes
local art celebrities
such as Frank Lloyd Wright
and Georgia O’Keefe
in the industrial chic hotel
on East Washington Street

PC
with palettes of rainbow drinks
and pillows of moonbeams

C
as I lie there in bed
at the new historic hotel
listening for life lessons
that it’s old bricks tell
about bold colors of love
that forever dwell
in rich hues of hearts
and souls of ourselves

keys open rooms
into hearts and souls
at Hotel Indigo

B
I pull soft sheets up
roll over in bed
look out the window of our room
watch city lights
as dreams fill my head
as love’s keys open doors to you

C
as I lie there in bed
at the new historic hotel
listening for life lessons
that it’s old brick tell
about bold colors of love
that forever dwell
in rich hues of hearts
and souls of ourselves

keys open rooms
into hearts and souls
at Hotel Indigo

I like your brush with personification, learning lessons from old brick walls. I can picture myself lying in bed, staring out the window and being right there at that hotel.

Very interesting story about the hotel, visiting your friend and interesting to read your lyrics too. Thank you for the prompt.

So many great images and phrases. I think I like "urban cavities" the best.

Oh, I want to visit this place! What colorful descriptions you have that in a way make me feel I've already been there. Love this one!

I dig the idea of something being "new historic". A blending of past and present to make something new and amazing for the future. Super cool!
And repurposing and reusing also. I wonder if it's cheaper to refurbish old buildings like that? More environmentally friendly? Or neither? Or both? They've got so much character. I hate it when they tear them down to build something brand new.
If I'm ever in Madison, I know where I'm staying! Smile
