Liner Notes:

I wrote this while I was at the Rocky Mountain Song School in August, and had the immense privilege of performing it on stage there with eight of my favorite people singing harmony. Sadly, it appears there’s no audio recording of that, so this is just me singing it alone in my apartment.

This one goes out to all my fellow LGBTQIA+ loves.

Lyrics:

I have been afraid to hold my lover’s hand outside
Wished with all my being that we didn’t have to hide
The space we hold between us is the safest that persists
In a world that questions whether we get to exist

We hold on to each other
‘Cause we need to to survive
We may be bruised or broken
But together we will rise

I’ve felt my heart inside my throat when looking in the mirror
Wrestled with identities and how I might appear
I’ve seen my siblings murdered and their memories erased
Forgotten by society; they call us a disgrace

We hold on to each other
‘Cause we need to to survive
We may be bruised or broken
But together we will rise

My people, we are brilliant
We are beautiful and wise
Wondrous and worthy
And together we will rise

We hold on to each other
‘Cause we need to to survive
We may be bruised or broken
But together we will rise

This is so touching and brought tears to my eyes. Tomorrow is the date that my brother (who was gay) died. Beautiful, just beautiful.

This has such a deliciously bittersweet feeling. That chorus is great--you must have been tingling all over with those other people singing harmony around you. Lovely
