Liner Notes:

My father and I took a quick one night trip to Memphis, TN this weekend as a birthday trip, get away. It was a great time even though I did all the driving and I'm super tired. But on the way down through southern Missouri my father made the comment that "you can't go straight in Missouri." Which is very true literally, but also has that double meaning that I couldn't help but think about all weekend. I got home and had to write this.

Lyrics:

Let's all go take a ride
We'll head south and see what we can find
All these hills and turns
Scare me a little more every time

Looks like it's gonna rain
I can hear the thunder's booming sound
Can't see the twists and turns
In the flash of the lightning crashing down

No, you can't go straight in Missouri
Devils and temptations all around
You can't go straight in Missouri
Might as well throw your dreams all on the ground
You can't go straight in Missouri

I push the pedal down
To outrun the mistakes of my past
But I can see the pain
Reflected in the rear view mirror glass

I grip the steering wheel
And feel the rubber slipping on the road
And I lose control
End up in a pile of flames and smoke

No, you can't go straight in Missouri
Devils and temptations all around
You can't go straight in Missouri
Might as well throw your dreams all on the ground
You can't go straight
No, you can't go straight
You can't go straight in Missouri

Beautiful sound about what sounds like a lovely yet somewhat white knuckle ride. Love the energy in the chorus and the contrast with the verses. Great extended metaphor that evolves so beautifully through the song. As always your vocals are gorgeous and guitar is perfect!

I had to listen to this since I live in Missouri. I am not sure if I have ever heard this saying but it makes for a fabulous song! Great guitar and singing too!

I like the whole metaphor of trying to outrun your past and never being able to. Works well with the minor tone of the song. But I think everyone can relate to that feeling of wanting to put the past behind them and being unsure as to how to do that. Really speaks to the heart things. Nicely written.

I like this a whole hell of a lot. This could easily be added to, a cajon would be cool in the chorus, some chimes, a flute maybe. You could totally folk the snot out of this.
