Skoolie Build [Demo] - Stuart Benbow

Liner Notes:

A couple of weeks ago, I asked @darcistrutt to roll me a set of story cubes. My results were rather odd, and took me a bit to weave the images together into a cohesive whole. My images were 1. A rocket ship 2. A person making a grossed out face 3. A hand 4. A crow 5. A person pressing a button, like a door bell.

I've been super busy with work lately, and haven't had time to write in a few months, so it took a bit to get the ideas flowing. Our skoolie is named the Muse Cruiser, so it seemed fitting that she would be the inspiration needed to morph those 5 die results into a song.

The video slide show that accompanies the song is the progress from last October, picking it up from Maryland and transporting it back to Michigan, all the way to this past week, when I finished the wood paneling on one of the bedroom walls and doorway. If you're interested, the next projects are fitting out the bathroom, a couple of doors, and building a fold up desk along the wood paneled bedroom wall so I can use that space as a traveling recording booth.

Anyway, back to the song, it's a very rough recording, thanks to a sore throat, and the playing is pretty basic, as I've got tendonitis and carpel tunnel in both arms and hands that have me benched from work for a couple of weeks. The idea still comes across, though I'm sure it will evolve once I'm back to full musical strength.

Lyrics:

She may not be a high powered rocket
Barely keeps up with the flow of traffic
But I built her with my own two hands

Ring the bell, or give a knock
Climb aboard and settle in
We're ready to hit the road

She's my skoolie build
Customized to fit my needs
I'll take her where I will
though I'm sure that doesn't please everyone
No fancy RV parks
where the snobs all think it's gross
Really they're just jealous
I don't care whose cost the most

She may still scream school bus on the outside
There's just no disguising her past life
Oh, but inside that's where it's at

I'd rather go way off grid
The closest neighbor is a bird
And that crow don't mind me a bit

She's my skoolie build
Customized to fit my needs
I'll take her where I will
though I'm sure that doesn't please everyone
No fancy RV parks
where the snobs all think it's gross
Really they're just jealous
I don't care whose cost the most

Surely she wasn't turn key
Needed more than elbow grease
A vision, plan and steady hand

Bit by bit
and Piece by piece
What a skoolie is, is freedom

She's my skoolie build
Customized to fit my needs
I'll take her where I will
though I'm sure that doesn't please everyone
No fancy RV parks
where the snobs all think it's gross
Really they're just jealous
I don't care whose cost the most

Really they're just jealous
I don't care whose cost the most

Looks like you put a lot of work into that bus. Cool to make a song out of it. Good job on fitting in the story cube stuff. That was really random. But man, you've made a sweet little tune here. Nice melody, great guitar and a good story to boot.

Missed your dulcet tones! Put the phones on settled down and enjoyed this gentle rendition.

Thanks for sharing your project with us. I didn't really know this was a thing! And the music is like a pleasant summer breeze stirring the waters of a pond. Very nice!

Wow, great work, musically and bus.

I missed an opportunity to pick up a 3/4 (?) not sure of terms/words/lexicon, anyway from or with late 50'-60's body style that had been converted, then half stripped -- so not sure if better or worse for it since then had the bathroom, kitchen, power, A/C stuff figured in. Anyway, -- no on had time to think, -- sold.

I guess too, I wonder about the mechanicals of it, so I guess, I/me would consider a rebuild drivetrain (?) ... I guess there is likely some on line support group for all of this.

The other side of it too, I kind of hate highway driving, -- recently back from Dallas, -- only took the "service" road in parallel, because I really hate the highway AND all the cool stuff was on the local in parallel road too!

I suppose I'd be more relaxed maybe in a big vehicle. I went for my Drivers License to drive one, but, never completed that too. I am not sure if not driving it commercially, like a "Semi" if one has to have that endorsement (?)

Anyway, -- as you can see, I do love the idea of it all!

Rather than rabbit trail this, end it, you get the drift, -- and great sound track!

(How's it handle? -- weight dist all figured out and etc for it I assume! Smile )

-- Really great stuff to see; and all the best for the other challenges you comment too! I hope all is well.
