Liner Notes:

This is a 'sort of skirmish'- in that it took longer then the usual one hour to do a skirmish. I saw the title 'moon over (fill in the blank) and thought about my town here of New York City... wrote up something without knowing how I'd set it to music.

the next day I came up with the singing part (moon over brooklyn, etc...) and then just figured some old fashioned finger snaps, 1950's beat-poet style, would do the trick, so here ya go.... enjoy

Lyrics:

There’s a moon over New York City

We Got places to avoid, people to interrupt
While Waxing nostalgic for blue and white coffee cups
Streets to jaywalk and taxis to curse
Subways to conquer for better or worse

And the moon just reflects the light of the sun
That cheap parlor trick could be easily done

Who’s gonna bother, who’s gonna try?
To look up, make eye contact with the sky
Can you even see that circle of white?
Between two buildings, could be a streetlight
Or some fat white pigeon, flying too low
Or maybe its just some albino crow

The moon’s just some dirt that got in your eyelid
Or maybe the government’s keeping it hid
A creation of tin pan alley that lingers
To rhyme with the month of June, so some singer
Can sell you a dream that sticks in your brain
Convincing you, your life’s not insane

Oh Moon over Brooklyn
We got something cookin’
Moon over Staten Island
From Tottenville down Hylan
Moon over the Bronx
Finding amor in the honky tonks
Moon over Queens
In 90 languages by all means
Moon over Manhattan
Smooth silver grey and satin

But you can’t con me, I wasn’t born this morning
I’m hip to those street corner preacher warnings
That the world’s gonna end, maybe that time’s arrived
Didn’t Ford say drop dead to this city in ’75?

I was there, I know where the bodies are buried
Or maybe dumped quickly off the staten island ferry
And a great poet died there, he was great in his day
So let’s raise a glass to Spaulding Gray

But I soon digress, we were talking of the moon
And maybe the light that we all will see soon
But right now its dark, though the light will arrive
When the mist slowly lifts over the FDR Drive
And just to the left of Roosevelt Island
Past the Long Island City towers so silent
Or that lone kayak bobbin by the boat basin docks
As the seagulls taste crumbs from Zabar’s, and Lox
Is delivered in trucks that pour over potholes
Who no more meet men who take highway tolls
From outstretched arms, now its all electronic
The reach of the beast, oh so slightly demonic
As the moon is my witness, we’ve seen so much change
I guess nothing can ever remain just the same
But the moon just sits there with that same damn face facin
All of us running around and still racin’
So yeah, I sometimes do notice the moon
I’m from New York City, man, we wrote that tune

Oh Moon over Brooklyn
We got something cookin’
Moon over Staten Island
From Tottenville down Hylan
Moon over the Bronx
Finding amor in the honky tonks
Moon over Queens
In 90 languages by all means
Moon over Manhattan
Smooth silver grey and satin

So yeah, I sometimes do notice the moon
I’m from New York City, man, we wrote that tune

nice skirmish. love the beat poetry style... it is so NY. i like how you go into the a capella tune chorus, like you just can't help but sing. so many great lines - amazing for a skirmish. very enjoyable listen

Maybe this is how rap started ? Wink I really enjoyed reading your lines are you read them, such clear images.

Wow! I am imagining you performing this (maybe in the Greenwich Village bar where I hung out before seeing the Grateful Dead at MSG in '87).
What delivery - musical, for sure, and funny and sly and cinematic!

Quite an enjoyable and very descriptive lyric. Beat poetry...I'm ready to look out through my shades over my bongo drums after adjusting my beret just right. In that scene we see just what "on the hip" means. Great job.

Great lyric and I like the beat poetry delivery a lot.

You have a great delivery through most of this song and I love how the simple rhythmic snaps work so well.

I love the snaps! Glad you can see the moon in NYC--ya know there are also stars up there? Get out of town and dig the Milky Way!
