Pretty Little Picture

Liner Notes:

Superskirmishes are golden for triggering song ideas. Here's another one inspired by them.

Lyrics:

Just an 8-by-10 in a fancy frame.
It's got your face; it's got your name.
Now, any time I want, I can hold you tight,
Kiss you goodmorning, hello, goodnight.

It's just a pretty little picture.
It won't make me cry.
It won't tell me lies.
Just a pretty little picture.
It could never take the place of your sweet kiss.

Just a 4-by-6 on my fridge door.
We don't dance in the kitchen no more.
Yeah, there's no more angry words exchanged,
but I no longer get to hear you sing.

It's just a pretty little picture.
It won't nag and complain.
No more shifting blame,
just a pretty little picture.
It could never replace the sweet voice that I miss.

I should call you,
but what if you said hello?
What if I lose my cool, or lose my nerve?
So, I don't.

Instead, I keep you everywhere I go
in a locket on a chain around my neck.
I pull you to my chest, and hold you close,
but I'd rather hear a heartbeat than be left

with just a pretty little picture.
No breath in my face,
no hands on my waste,
just a pretty little picture.
It could never replace your hand in mine,
the way we laughed and loved through the night,
that dreamy wanting-me look in your eyes...

Just an 8-by-10 in a fancy frame.
It has your face; it has your name.

Holy guacamole Woman! Talk about a flood of amazing lyrics! This is so perfectly honed and on a first write? OK...I am humbled. I love how you juxtapose all the things you loved and then rationalize not having to deal with those annoyances as a way of staying cool and collected. But then you keep coming back to to the pretty little picture to hold on to. You really nailed walking that fine line between longing and loss, and bucking up. Wow!!

I love how this builds while the pictures get smaller as the verse progresses. Very descriptive take on the skirmish. Thanks for playing!

Andy, I never even thought of the size of the pictures decreasing as the song builds, but it makes sense.
