Old Cedar Table

Next to the hearth, the table is the heart of the home.

This old cedar table

As her dowry after the war
It was too fine for a clapboard shack
but they knew what to use it for.

This old cedar table
could seat 9 kids and 4 hired hands
It offered respite from raging wind
heat and cold in this new land

This old cedar table
proudly wears its dings and scars
earned over seventy years
A record of 4 generation's love, laughter and tears.

They say a home is warmed by the hearth
But gathered round the table,
we know that it is the heart.

This old cedar table
was used to roll a dozen loaves of daily bread,
weekly card games, Sunday dinners,
and once to hold the dead.

This old cedar table
is too vast for just us two.
But it safely holds the memories
of all that we've been through

Wow, great lyrics. Lots of memories wrapped up in that table! Enjoy Mariposa!

"Table" was my prompt for the weekend Superskirmish!
And I sure hope you set this one to music. Such poignant, vivid detail. Poetic rhyme and meter that would be fun and interesting to sing. Good one!
