Liner Notes:

John @oneslowtyper was kind enough to write me some lyrics. And what a great job he did. I don't do many sad songs but this one is exceptionally good. Not only for the careful and considerate handling of a difficult subject but also - and I can't stress this enough- verses that can be sung with the exact same melody.

I remember when my father died from cancer in a hospital. We were there all night and when we got out I was amazed that the sun was rising, people going to work, children rushing to school. Just so if you're wondering why that one bit is there in the demo.

Some audio recordings were used on this by goldkelchen and steve-errickson from Freesound.org.

Lyrics:

Empty
V1
She smiled all the while
Though she was aching
She knew her only truth
Was she was faking…

V2
We thought she had a life
And had a family…
She seemed so satisfied
But she was empty…

Ch
Empty all the while… empty little smile…
Empty and so cold... so co-old...
We weren't being cruel
We all were simply fooled
We didn't see the signs - and now we're empty...empty

Solo

V3
She danced when music played
It seemed to free her…
She went to church and prayed
A true believer?

V4
She thought her life might change
Perhaps, tomorrow...
We didn't see her pain
Or feel the sorrow...

Ch
Empty all the while… empty little smile…
Empty and so cold... so co-old...
We weren't being cruel
We all were simply fooled
We didn't see the signs - and now we're empty...empty

Ch
Empty all the while… empty little smile…
Empty and so cold... so co-old...
We weren't being cruel
We all were simply fooled
We didn't see the signs - and now we're empty...empty

I like this so much. Even though you don't often do sad songs, you did a fantastic job! Great lyrics, wonderful song.

Started off like a Dramedy cue, building from there, and I could definitely hear this in a film. Really told a story.

Perfect marriage of lyrics and music. The sense of sadness is conveyed well without feeling too dramatic. It is enjoyable to listen to and to get caught up in.

I really like this, Klaus. Even when you're trying to spend less time with each demo, on your quest for a true 50/90 finish, the quality is still very much there. I wish I had more time to jump in and play, but you know I'll be more active after this weekend.
Cheers my friend,
John

Very dramatic! The lyrics tell a compelling story, and the performance is full of theatrical panache, the music and vocal style really selling the song. I can see this performed just this way in a smokey nightclub, the singer performing with all his heart. Nice!

Excellent lyrics and super great performance Klaus! The Melody is quite impressive as is the musical arrangement with pauses and I think even tempo change. Well done!

You capture the sad and sorrowful lyrics spot on, Klaus, keys great and your voice works for this kind of songs as well! Love the way you sing 'sorrow' in verse 4. Sounds caring. Great job both!

That electric piano is marvelous and in keeping with the sad tone of the lyrics. The introduction of the drums very nice, indeed ... like melancholic 70s pop. Emotional! That break in the middle with the slightly spooky toy piano and kids' voices is just masterful. The "Oh Ohs" also a nice touch!

Intence and emotional . Very great sadness in both music and performance. Great instrumentation. Lovely lyrics. Awesome collab

Oh my, that chorus is splendid for conveying the depth and rush of feeling a person might have waking up to this recognition. Such a sorrowful story for all the characters. The music you’ve made for it is emotional, just a little bit sad and chilling but then opening up wide (literally) on the chorus, with the caring that could not be expressed in time.

I read the lyrics first - powerful, and made for music.
And Klaus captures the feel of the lyrics so well. He's right - John's lyrics are so sing-able. The piano-centric chord progression is super interesting with just the right dramatic flair. Excellent collab!

The lyrics are so moving and tell such a sad story and your music and vocals just add everything it needed. Excellent collaboration you guys!

Nice collab guys. The chorus rocks!!! Juicy bits scattered here and there too!

Excellent Wurli-like sounds here! Such economy of musical elements here, relying on the power of the words with little touches here and there to propel us towards...madness? Murder? Maybe both! Excellent collab.
