Liner Notes:

Song one. Music first this time. I did the guitar, banjo, xylophone, and bass tracks separately to a metronome. Thanks to the city and neighbors for the fireworks in the background. I had a vague idea of the title and verse progression but followed the music surprising myself with the punkish anthem. Also could be part of a looosely connected musical idea. After all there are 89 days left in the challenge.

Lyrics:

Independents Independence
D E E D E D E E D E C E

Verse 1
Hand me a bible tell me to read it
Tell me this is the only way believe it
Your way or the highway take it or leave it
I’m not signing up for your pledge
I’m not accepting what comes down from your stage

Chorus 1
Today is declared my independents independence
Free from the trappings of the devil and god
Today is declared my independents independence
Freedom to think and choose what I want

Verse 2
Hand me a pledge book tell me to learn it
Getting no respect you say I’ve gotta earn it
Give you all my time so you can burn it
I’m not signing up for your pledge
I won’t take the part in your play

Chorus 2
Today is declared my independents independence
Free from the trappings of the Greeks and freaks
Today is declared my independents independence
Freedom to think and choose what I speak

Verse 3
Hand me a registration card tell me how to play
Republican or Democrat or I don’t get a say
Wait till the general election is too late
I’m not signing up for their pledge
I’m not sending up their stage

Chorus 3
Today is declared my independents independence
Free from the trappings of liberal or conservative
Today is declared my independents independence
Freedom to think and choose what I want to give

Verse 4
America once broke away from England and the kings nonsense and nonesuch
Now it seems like its devolved to being much worse
We’ve burned all those blessings and turned them into a curse
I’m not signing anyone’s pledge
I’m setting up my own stage

Chorus 4
Today is declared my independents independence
Free from black and white thinking just right and wrong
Today is declared my independents independence
Freedom to choose how I compose this song

That rhythmic setting is really strong. A worthy contemplation about what "independence" is and can mean!

The music really works for me; I know you said you'd do a song an instrument, -- so just one song then? Smile

Anyway, I love music that jumps off like this, and again, -- it works. Good stuff.

the independents independence line is so catchy. i like the recorded fade. cool lyrics and music too. i agree with metalfoot the rhythm is so strong. nice opening number

Really cool mix of instruments! I dig the defiance, too.
We watched the city fireworks last night - can see them from the end of our street.

Lots of interesting things going on in this. Lyrically, musically, and in terms of questions about how a nation state retains it's democratic legitimacy in an increasingly complex world.

Sounds great, does have a punky feel to it, chorus is great. Lots of interesting ideas, so be interesting to see how they develop over 50/90.

I listened first before reading the liner notes, and the punk feeling is strong in this one. The theme and words definitely qualify, and while the music isn't prototypical punk, it's its own herky-jerky thing (kind of like early DEVO?), and really, what's more truly punk than that? Hypnotically captivating, and utterly compelling. I quite liked the long fade at the end too.

"Yahweh or the highway" as we used to joke. Sorry, I know, a really, really, really old joke. I heartily approve of this recording. Love the sounds.

Yeah, think for yourself. Don't just go along with the crowd. Well asserted stand you are taking with your music and vocals. The fade is like a parade march moving on down the street. Well done!
