Liner Notes:

Based on a true story.

Lyrics:

My grandfather did not drink beer.
He preferred to drink something else.
My grandfather did not drink beer.
He drank something from higher on the shelf.

Everclear was his drink of choice!
Everclear is its name! 95% alcohol by volume.
Everclear is its name!
Everclear is its name!

Many people, when they get Everclear,
they like to use it in drinks.
Mixed drinks. Cheap drinks.
Drinks all the same.

But my grandfather he did not do that.
He preferred something else.
Shots of Everclear, yes,
until he could not think.

Everclear was its name!
Everclear was its name!
No beer for him. No, no, no, no!
Just Everclear for him.

He was kind of an alcoholic.
He really loved his Everclear.
He would wake up
in puddles of his own puke.

Everclear! Oh, Everclear!
He was not ever the same.

These days they say there is this thing
called alcohol-induced Alzheimer's.
These days they say there's this thing
called alcohol-induced Alzheimer's.

Everclear! Oh, Everclear!
Everclear was its name!
My grandfather's choice of all of the drinks.
It was not, not tame.

It does not have much flavor.
It's not something you sip.
But, you know, my clan we're non-tasters,
and we don't need to sip.

We don't taste the bitter things.
Alcohol is our game.
We can enjoy many bitter things.
Like all the same.

No beer for him. No, not ever.
He just preferred the harder stuff.
No beer for him. No, not ever.
He wanted his stuff just top shelf.

Everclear! Oh, Everclear!
Everclear was the name!
He wanted to forget horrors of war
and he used Everclear.

Oy, Everclear is not good for you. The horrors of war can do that to a person. Poignant and powerful.

Powerful writing. Sadly, alcohol-induced alzheimer's is indeed a thing. Over the last three decades I've watched it obliterate my father's personality. It's not been pleasant.

I've never tried Everclear - I had opportunities years ago, and I was too scared.
A powerful, sad story, told with directness and detail. That last verse is a real gut-punch.
My grandfather fought in World War II and was a whiskey drinker into his 40s. Then one day he up and quit and lived 40 more years.
I like how this skirmish also brought out songs about the downside of alcohol excess.
