Beer and Wine

Liner Notes:

Beware commentary on religion. I honestly just really didn't want to write a song about enjoying beer. I'm not sure I like this better.

I'm imagining the sound shifting from shouted punk at the beginning and end through full-on jazz in the middle, although I'm not sure sure how to handle some of the transitional stages.

Beer was invented by monks, right? Pretty sure that's a thing.

Lyrics:

God wanted us to have beer
God wanted us to have wine
God wanted us to feel queer
And think that we're feeling fine

When it's time to spread some cheer
Instead we moan and whine
And have a Christmas beer
It's all by God's design

When we've had an awful year
We think we deserve some time
To make our troubles blear
With a bottle or two of wine

And when we've forgotten we steer
Right back to the scene of the crime
And the only thing we remember clear
Is the tipple we use to unwind

Every alcoholic drink here
Was inspired by beer and wine
We call it the devil's drink dear
I'll have a lemon slice on mine

It's just a more efficient beer
And it tastes better than wine
And so eagerly we veer
And drown ourselves in brine

When anybody near
Is getting out of line
We drink at every leer
'Til we can't see the sign

And when we go to church and hear
How God is so benign
We nod our heads and cheer
Because he gave us beer and wine

God wanted us to lose those held dear
God wanted us to lose our minds
God wanted us to have beer
God wanted us to have wine

Please keep your comments respectful, honest, and constructive. Please focus on the song and not the demo.

I love that "more efficient beer" line. That last verse before the repeated stanza is great. I'm nodding my head in agreement.

Beer wasn't invented by monks but they sure liked making it! Strong lyrics here, and I can see your envisioned style idea working with this lyric.

God wanted us to lose our minds -- great thought. He also apparently gave us mushrooms and things we can smoke...

A friend of mine has a t-shirt that says "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy", attributed to Ben Franklin (though I'm sure that's suspect).

I, too, was thinking of the Ben Franklin quote standup referenced.
Although I'm a fan of both beer and wine, I appreciate the clarity and straightforwardness sobriety can inspire - and you show both in your words. Great rhymes and meter - made for music. Good skirmish write - often the best come from limited time spent.

Clever transition and I didn't see the full circle coming. I hope this gets music.

I didn't write a song about enjoying beer. I wrote a song about my grandfather's alcoholism.

The path from "I didn't want to write about enjoying beer" to what you have here is interesting.
