Liner Notes:

Mike--- so Liz asked me if I was interested in setting a lyric of hers to music, I used this one, which she entitled 'the fallacy of free and brave'
(her original lyric and post is here at http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/song/30628 )
I made a few minor changes to the lyric, and added music and did a quick recording.

enjoy!

Lyrics:

V1
in the land of the free
and home of the brave
we trip over wounded knees
don't care if sacred ground is saved

in the land of the free
and home of the brave
we grow wealth through poverty
and we traffic human slaves

C

what is so proudly we hail
if we let the struggling fail (sung as 'if we let folks fail')
without empathy for their past

oh say can you see
we don't all have liberty
some remain pawns of a ruling class

V2
in the land of the free
and home of the brave
we turn our backs on refugees
put innocent children in a cage

in the land of the free
and the home of the brave
we tolerate misogyny
incite violence with hateful rage

C
what is so proudly we hail
if we let the struggling fail (sung as 'if we let folks fail')
without empathy for their past

oh say can you see
we don't all have liberty
some remain pawns of a ruling class

B
free and brave
are just words white men gave
in our past history
free and brave
from the cradle to the grave
aren't true reality

C
oh say can you see
we don't all have liberty
some remain pawns of a ruling class

what so proudly we hail
if we let the struggling fail
without empathy for their past

Really cool jazz-funk-gypsy musical interpretation - I would have expected a more traditional folk treatment from reading the words.
Powerful, straightforward words with some vivid images. Good collab!

I like the way the lyric remixes the patriotic cliches into its honest and pointed critique. The minor key works well for the mood, while the tempo and strumming give it energy. The vocal phrasing on "home of the brave" is interesting - gives the phrase a feeling of being just words, as is indicated later in the lyric.
