Liner Notes:

This song was inspired by a post in a Facebook group about peoples fears of being a career musician. Some of the answers were respectable but some were pretty irrational and I used those as the main inspiration of this comical song.

Lyrics:

I’ll never play the Grand Ol' Opry
Or have a million records sold.
Cause I won’t sell my soul to Satan
Besides I’m getting too damn old.
I’ll probably never win a Grammy
So hell, why even try.
I’ll let my dreams fall to the wayside
And I’ll go work a 9 to 5.

Yeah I could be a big star
Sometimes I play one in my mind.
But I’ll probably never “make it”
So why should I even try?
I’ll play it safe so I don’t wind up
Broke and sleeping in my car.
I’ll be content with being normal
Knowing I could have been a star.

I’ll probably never have a hit song
Playing on the radio.
I’ll never sell out big arenas
Touring out there on the road.
Won’t have to hide from paparazzi
Or get addicted to some drug
I’ll never have a groupie orgy
In the back of my tour bus.

Yeah I could be a big star
Sometimes I play one in my mind.
But I’ll probably never “make it”
So why should I even try?
I’ll play it safe so I don’t wind up
Broke and sleeping in my car.
I’ll be content with being normal
Knowing I could have been a star.

And I know when get older
I’ll probably look back with regret
For not following the dreams I had
That kept on messing with my head.

I’ll say I could have been a big star
Sometimes I played one in my mind
But I never would have “made it”
So I never even tried.
I played it safe and didn’t wind up
Broke and sleeping in my car.
I’m quite content with being normal
Knowing I could have been a star.

Yes I’m content with being normal
Knowing I could have been a star.

Welcome back. Hope that means computer issues fixed! Nice country song with that little bit of humour! Good track!

Classic country feel. The lyric is perfect -- Satan, grammies, grand ol' Opry. Most of us here at 50/90 have probably thought about this. Whatever chances I ever had I only saw in hindsight, and as a middle-aged guy with an OK life I can see that I dodged a bullet. Reminds me of "False Eyelashes" by Dolly Parton, kind of the flipside of this story.

BIAB does a great job with pedal steel parts.

I clicked on this because of the tite, I'm a fan of the band Big Star.

Wow. I wasn't aware you had to sell your soul to Satan to play the Grand Ol Opry. I thought they did lots of Jesus music there. Smile It is funny how people really fear success and let that hold them back. I have my fears too, which ironically I've been working on breaking through lately. This is great fun. The track sounds awesome. Love that biab! Makes good stuff.
