Liner Notes:

Alex: So Doug and I have done a couple collabs in the past which have had a distinctly Johnny Cash feel to them. This one decidedly does NOT. He wrote these lyrics and sent them to me with the express instruction that they were not to be done in a Johnny Cash style.

I used my Silvertone guitar on two different amp settings for the guitars, my wife's Schechter Diamond bass through a Blackstar amp for the bass, drum loop from my G1XOn pedal, and some snarly vocals.

My 6 year old decided to drop a toy while I was recording but hey, it's life here and I wasn't going to get a better take so random crash noise lives!

Lyrics:

Penthouse drinks
Softest minks
She has expensive taste
A need to be
In luxury
There is no time to waste

Work the plan
Find a man
A lonely millionaire
A burglar’s knife
Will take his life
Graveside, she’ll mouth a prayer

(Chorus)
Can’t you see?
She’s a…
Black widow
Spinning her devious web
Black widow
Black widow
Someone always ends up dead

The lawyers swear
What’s there is there
The will he wrote reads clear
His lovely bride
Is satisfied
His kids get souvenirs

Crack of dawn
She moves on
To live the life she earned
Another town
And wedding gown
And one more man is burned

(Chorus)
Can’t you see?
She’s a…
Black widow
Spinning her devious web
Black widow
Black widow
Someone always ends up dead

(Bridge)
But a handsome man is onto her
Coming up from behind
He’s spinning silk threads all his own
He’s telling her that she’s the one
The thought someone else could play her game
Never crosses her mind

(Chorus)
Can’t you see?
She’s a…
Black widow
Spinning her devious web
Black widow
Black widow
Someone always ends up dead

(Final Chorus)
She’s a…
Black widow
Black widow
Spinning her devious web
Black widow
Black widow
Someone always ends up dead
(2X)

Oh wow! Not what I expected but such a great fit! So good you two!

Great vox there.
Such snarly goodness from the guitar, too.
I bet this would go over well live on stage.
Nice minimalist guitar break.
Great work, folks!

Not what I expected from you, pleasant surprise. Really like the attitude and vocal delivery.

Rough and rocking. Really nice tortured vocals, especially those high notes at the end of phrases. They fit the lyrics well. Lyrics are cynical and gloomy and lovely. Very cinematic, like some film noir script with rhymes. Smile I like the twist in the bridge, it gives more meaning to the last line of the chorus. Great collab you two.

I like the twist in the story....karma is always satisfying. The lyric is very concise and packs a punch. The music picks up on that and has a catchy melody and hints of the danger lurking. Nicely conceived and executed!

Great hook and story, the lyrics do lend themselves to this style, love how you keep that vocal tone going, not easy to do, it works. Dropped toys are the touch that every song needs LOL!

That's a cool lyric. I like the shorter lines with the ton of smaller details that end up making a vivid whole. And the guitars sound tasty, I like the distortion. And I like the vocal delivery, too. This is a cool song.

I can't think of any titles at the moment, but there were lots of poppy jazzy tunes back in the day about women in search of millionaires. This lyric brings that ear back to life. Love the rocking tune and melody. That chorus is totally catchy and memorable. Great all around, though I'm sure Johnny Cash could've done it justice, too

I love this hard gritty rock song. Great lyrics and sound. Smile

Wow...I am digging the vocal delivery and these edgy lyrics.
Hmm....if I'm around here for the next 50/90, I definitely can think of some stuff this kind of vocal performance would go great with. (putting a pin in that)
Even though this is punky and grungy, I get crystal clear images of sophisticated man and woman in expensive clothing, shot in black and white with only like...ties and necklaces in vivid color (like those Zales commercials lol)...
This is quite cool stuff.

Yes! Not your usual style and I like it! You had fun with this one. Also, love the subject matter. I have a fondness for murder ballads and punk and this is like they smooshed!
