-- Like many, most of these, there was a framework from which favorit versions survived and evolved and continues.

So that link above, is very convenient hour+ of versions spanning from when first recorded to '73; my guess is that this is circa 1800 lyrics (when stuff was considered for to be written down). However no one even attempts to guess a year, not even the two authoritative, out of print books I have concerning American Spirituals. One needs to consider a possible start date of 1619; then add a hundred or two cycles of 50 years, 1719 for cultural music evolution. Then add another two cycles of 50 years, 1819 for all the other "stuff" to occur, and it being actually considered for to be written down in any regard, so circa 1800. "Studies" of this began circa 1920's with the evolution of Record distribution, marketing, -- people started to hear stuff from all over the world, *country. My books are 1925 and 1940, where it pretty much starts and ends as far as beginnings go. I love the argument that the "Black Church" swiped the "White Church" music, uh, no, fully vise versa. And, what the hell does that mean anyway?!? Smile )

And now you have mine 2018 Crazy Music 2 -- musication will be forth coming. (Hopefully no lyric changes, but, no promises. ]

Lyrics:

You needn't mind, my dying
You needn't mind, my dying
You needn't mind, my dying
Jesus gonna, make my dying bed

In my time of dying
No don't, no one mourn
And all my friends I want you to
Just take my transformed hand
Well well well..., I die, easy
And well..., I die, easy
Well well well..., I die, easy
Jesus gonna, make my dying bed

Meet me Jesus, meet me
Meet me, in the air
And if my wings should fail me, Lord
Meet me with another pair
Well well well..., I die, easy
And well..., I die, easy
Well well well..., I die, easy
Jesus gonna, make my dying bed

Since I have known Jesus
We have never been apart
He takes my scars, and mends my parts
Holy Spirits got my heart
Well well well..., He's, my savior
And well..., He's, my savior
Well well well..., He's, my savior
Jesus gonna, make my dying bed

So when I'm down, at the river
Sticking my sword, in the sand
Gonna shout my trouble's over, --Lord
I've made it to the Promised Land
I've made it to the Promised Land, --Lord
I've made it to the Promised Land
I'll cross, over, then, Lord
Jesus gonna make my dying bed

one of my favorite cuts on dylans forst album, and chris cornell sang this in his final concert before suiciding. i like your variation on the lyrics and am eager to hear what you do with it musically.
