Midnight Special - Circa 1890-1915 public domain, many versions, here's another (c) aka, iustaknow
I was thinking about this song for some reason, don't know why really, and then thought of 5090, and then thought, well, why not do yet another version. Not quite the "poetry" to music challenge in the forum here, but, gett'in there Smile

So, yes, as in "folk music", "tradition" -- the lyrics got changed! And in this case quite a bit. As well, the Melody for me was more natural spoken word, not the versions we hear so many iterations of. Nonetheless, I do reference the folk root of it, since where it comes from. I guess I could rename it and comment derived from, --what's the difference Smile

And, of course, in this instance the names and places may have been changed to deviate from reality to some safe degree. I try to keep some piece of reality in my work... , it's here.

-- Oh yes, I literally just wrote this, this past hour and sounds it... but, regardless of how it firms up, I didn't want to loose it as can happen, --so put it here, as-is Smile one-take wonder as I was writing it. (It's so weird to put on head phones if practiced w/o... throws me off a bit... and pull back... was stronger when practiced prior to "recording"... shudda hadda tape running aye? Smile )

Lyrics:

F C G ...

Am a^ Em g^ Am Em
Lord shine your light, down on me
Am a^ Em g^ Am F
Lord shine your light, down on me (d# d c..., a c) Am

F a C g G d
Yonder come Rosie, how in the world did you know?
F a C g G d
Thru the bars of her apron, I see the dress she tore
F f C g G d
Umbrella on her shoulder, my list she scored

* /Am a Em g F c Am
She screams, Lord have mercy turn loose my good man
G d d F Am Em
And let the Midnight Special..., shine your light on me
Em F Am Em
Shine your light on me

F C G
When you get up in the Mournin' when that Toll bell rings
F C G
When you go..., marching to the table, see that crowd of screams
F C G /Em g ^
There's a man, with the troubles, with the plans of phene's

G d F Am Em
Let the Midnight Special..., shine your light on me
Em F Am Em
Shine your light on me ...

F C G
If you're ever..., down Poke County way
F C G
You better not squabble, better make your pay
F C G Em g ^
Sheriff Boyse Karzwell, he'll make you Late

G d F Am Em
Let the Midnight Special..., shine your light on me
Em F Am Em
Shine your light on me ...

F C G
Well, jumpin' little Kimbo, she was a mighty fine girl
F C G
She brought, crazy, to her, whole world
F C G /Em g^
She brought the Mournin', grievin' burn'in curles

Am a^ Em g^ Am Em
Lord shine your light, down on me (2x)
Am a^ Em g^ Am F
Lord shine your light, down on me (d# d c..., a c) Am

What a great idea and inspiration for a song! Occasionally I hear a song on 50/90 and FAWM that affects me so much that I'd want to cover it, and this is one of them.
Recently I saw on PBS a wonderful version of Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie doing a version in the familiar way. I love how you've added a new dimension to this timeless song.

Wow, thank you very much for saying so. That really means allot to me. Thank you.

I love the rhythm of the lyrics, makes it feel like there's a hook in every line. Also, "crowd of screams" is fantastic imagery.

I like the rhythm of the guitar and melody. Gritty, heartfelt delivery.
