Colleen: I love collaboration with great lyricists....and Elizabeth Petty is one of my favorite 50/90 poets to work with. It's almost like she gets in my head and creates the lyrics I wish I'd written. Anyway, when I read through this set of lyrics I knew this was a winner. I only hope my amateur musical skills don't get in the way of you enjoying her fabulous lyrics.

Haven't most of us experienced this kind of heartbreak at least once in our lives?

LIZ says: Yes! Colleen! I love love love how you brought this alive with your absolutely gorgeous music and vocals! I really appreciate how you transform my words into beautiful in a way I could not have envisioned! You take adds a heartfelt tenderness. I am so grateful!!!!

And in answer to your question, I have NEVER experienced such heart break! Purely utterly fiction : )! Seriously I don't think I just have skid marks, I think I have some everlasting ruts at my age! And probably created some skids too. Live and learn, and most importantly, always keep loving, right?

Lyrics:

Original Lyrics:

V1
you put the
stars in your pockets
the sun in your suitcase
you pulled the
shades on the blue sky
wiped smiles from my face
you left behind
gray storm clouds
made my whole world dark
you drove off so quickly
you left skid marks
on my heart

C
my heart has been run over
it's been totally crushed
you drove fast into my life
then left in such a rush
things accelerated quickly
now I'm left in your dust ....

my heart will always carry
the skid marks...
skid marks of us

V2
you packed the
love songs in boxes
the music in trash bags
you buried the
poetry of life
erased the love we'd had
you left behind
empty silence
tore pages apart
you did it all so quickly
you left skid marks
on my heart

C
my heart has been run over
it's been totally crushed
you drove fast into my life
then left in such a rush
things accelerated quickly
now I'm left in your dust ...

oh my heart will always carry
the skid marks...
skid marks of us

B
oh I still feel the burn
of the heartache you made
and I still smell the stench
of the skid marks you laid .....

C
yeah ..my heart has been run over
it's been totally crushed
you drove fast into my life
then left in such a rush
things accelerated quickly
now I'm left in your dust ....

oh..my heart will always carry
the skid marks...
skid marks of us

(Optional- screech peel out - depending on genre and music)

I loved Liz's lyrics and wish I'd have thought of them and now with your talent added-great vocals and music -this is a winner!

As I commented when the lyrics were first posted, I think these words do a great job making the metaphors (auto and otherwise) both witty and legitimately moving, and the energetic performance gives it an upbeat feel, reassuring us that the "singer character" will be just fine, a bit older and dinged-up, perhaps, but also self-confidently driving the open road towards the future. Nice job, both of you!

What a great hook! Plus the consistency of the images. And now Colleen's beautiful music brings the words to life. Great collaboration, you two!

Great lyrics and wonderful vocal. Love your voice, and your interpretation of Liz's words!

I was expecting a more country sound to this. I like that it sounds more whimsical and wistful. I really like that. It pulled me in more.

Very pure vocal ... reminds me of some of the greats of the folk world. Beautiful melody, as well. LOVE the surrealist lyrics, like "stars in your pockets, the sun in your suitcase" and "you buried the poetry of life." A winner!

Nice song, I especially like the chorus! The imagery is a bit smelly but I don't mind Smile Well sung!
