Liner Notes:

Really rough write. Really rough demo! Really sad! I'll let this one sit here for a couple of months and then decide if it is worth putting more work into.

Lyrics:

Gooseberry Pie

due in late September
came early in July
doctor said we shouldn't
get our hopes too high
but he made it through
some rough spots
he'd soon be turning five
asking all the questions
thrilled to be alive

daddy please tell me
'bout gooseberry pie
how you met my mama
why chickens cannot fly
tell me about the party
we're havin' in July
and please wipe the tears
from your eyes

but his time on earth was fleeting
no need for askin’ why
gather on a hill
to say goodbye
sunlight slowly fading
shadows hide the trees
hold on to the memories
try our best to breath

daddy please tell me
'bout gooseberry pie
how you met my mama
why chickens cannot fly
tell me about the party
we're havin' in July
and please wipe the tears
from your eyes

leaves fall
eagles soar
waves crash
on distant shores
worlds turn
no relief
children go
parents grieve

daddy please tell me
'bout gooseberry pie
how you met my mama
why chickens cannot fly
tell me about the party
we're havin' in July
and please wipe the tears
from your eyes

This is rough? This is beautiful. Undoubtedly the most heart-wrenching song I've listened to in this 50/90. The words tear at the listener and the guitar is there to help but it's not showing off and your vocals are just right for the tone of the song. If you didn't write this from personal experience, you are a heckuva storyteller. And if you wrote it from personal experience, thank you for sharing it with us.

Oh gosh is this a true story?? Heart wrenching but poignant, beautiful. Yes worth running on imo too good to throw away. As always your lush vocals and expert folk picking makes this feel way more professional than a 'sketch'.

Oh John! I am crying. What an incredible song-so sad and touching. Keep it-it is masterful!

Oh wow... gorgeous heartfelt tender emotion pulls me right into the story. So compelling and poignant. The childhood innocence trust and love you prortray is profound. Such a sad story that feels like it is coming from something real - if so my tears of compassion and hugs -if not my tears for the amazing insight you bring to this that I am sure others who have lost a child prematurely will feel.

This is as beautiful as it is sad. And it is well written. I think when you return you'll find this is as it should be. And it deserves to be heard, I think.

Every year you get better and better, just on the lyrics alone. What a beautiful write, from the eyes of a child and his father. This is gold! What was the inspiration?

Touching in its intimacy, with a heartfelt vocal and, as always, a splendidly emotional performance that, in a strange way, is almost uplifting and hopeful for the time that was able to be shared.

wow this is really beautiful and sad... so well done. If I did it, i might have been slightly more oblique in that second verse, just to give the listener even more of a poetic experience rather then just the sadness, if you know what i mean.. but this is totally wonderful and beautiful as is, and yes, this should get 'out there'. great song, great performance too.

My eyes are filled with tears. What poignant lyrics! Your delivery of these fantastic lines sends chills up my spine. This is beautiful! The guitar is perfectly done to tell such an intimate story.

You always write great pie and wine songs. This is so full of deep emotion. It may not be about hens, but your chicken tune got me all teary-eyed. But in all seriousness, John... as sad a story as it is, it's beautiful. Another one for the books! Keep 'em coming!!!

Gorgeous song John, so beautiful, poetic, nostalgic and very dear. Love your lyrics, music, singing and playing and demo which is not rough at all.
